What people? The religious freaks? They dont count. This is science. The alingment will happen. That is a fact. How it will effect the Earth is still up in the air. We just have theories, no definites. And I hope those are wrong.

I agree. I know a crazy guy who bought a shotgun and he thought that we'd have total anarchy on the year 2000 on New Year's eve. I bet him a largeish amount of money that nothing would happen and I won!

As far as the end of the world theories go they've never been correct ever.

This is so obviously true, and it's extraordinary that it doesn't ever sink in.

What will happen?

- Any Mayans still living will have to go to Barnes & Noble and buy a new calendar.

Doomsday predictions?

- None of the supposed "alignments" are as precise as the doomsayers would have you believe.
- Alignments don't magically increase gravity. Why don't catastrophic things happen every solar and lunar eclipse when the Sun, Moon, and Earth line up?
- When your cat moves from your couch to your lap, it has more gravitational effect on you than the "galactic center" ... or in fact most of the Milky Way ... does on you.
- If you think the world will end in December 2012, just agree to sign over all your tangible assets to me in January 2013. I'll even pay you some cash right now if you agree to it.

I'll say it again, no it's not. It's not science at all.

The supermassive black hole has a mass of somewhere around 4 million solar masses. It lies about 7.6 kpc away. If we were to ignore all the other bodies of the galaxy except the blackhole, Sun and Earth:

Blackhole and Earth exert a force on each other of ~5.77x10^10 N
Sun and Earth exert a force on each other of ~3.54x10^22 N

So the blackhole's force is a trillion times weaker than the Sun's, approximately on a par with an object 1/5th the mass of Pluto when Pluto is at its nearest to Earth or thereabouts. So when the Sun and blackhole are in perfect alignment on the same side, the Earth is being accelerated towards the galactic centre by ~20 femto-metres per second more than when the Earth is directly between the Sun and blackhole (a femtometre is smaller than the width of a proton).

That's ignoring everything else in the galaxy too.

The Moon and the Sun are the only celestial bodies that really have the power to alter the climate remotely.
