As far as this date being significant as the end of the world, there is always the possibility of a natural disaster. Would it be a total extinction event? A meteor could strike the earth. Yellowstone is a geologic hot spot that is overdue to blow, and supposedly, the last time it blew it was one of the biggest volcanic expolsions that has ever occurred. Either of these events could have devastating global consequences, but only the most extreme situation would wipe out all life. In the end, we have to live our lives and enjoy our time. Worrying about a date in the future won't change the outcome.
