Rare books you have still in your library that nobody ever heard of before..

Which books do you have that are both equally hard to find and yet are added to your library collection?

is part of a discussion in the Et Cetera, Et Cetera forum that includes topics on Off-topic postings, current events, rants and raves....

Back in 2008 Larry McMurtry (Last Picture Show, Lonesome Dove) wrote a book about his dealings with books. Apparently he was a book dealing in Washington..and how has a huge book warehouse where he grew up in Texas. I think the book is called...Books, a memior.

An edition of 'The Court of Philip IV' by Martin Hume from 1907

'Christina of Denmark' by Julia Cartwright from 1913

A first edition of Nancy Mitford's 'Madame de Pompadour"

A Folio Society edition of 'Salome" by Oscar Wilde from 1957 with engravings by Frank Martin.

And a fairly rare edition of Goethe's Faust with full colour illustrations by Harry Clarke.

These are just some I can see from where I'm sitting now.I have a lot of old books, some I collect for rarity, some for their exquisite bindings, others for their illustrations, some I inherited from a relative with a very substantial library of old history books.

I have a pretty substantial library of my own at this point. It's an addiction.

Three Weeks by Elinor Glyn remains one of my favorite books, though I've already "loaned" three copies which have yet to be returned. Amazon used books, here I come (again).

The revolutionary smart set reads The Spin Cycle every day.

Blessed with brains, talent and gorgeous tits.

Latest: My father just sent me three volumes of Macmillan's Pocket Classics: Byron's Shorter Poems, A Collection of Short Stories, and Lowell's The Vision of Sir Launfal; published in 1922, 1924, 1927 respectively.

I also own the complete set of The Harvard Classics, all from the same year except two of them. Their value would increase if I could complete the set with all books from the same publication year.

They're not unknown, just rare.

Not from a library but books given to me as a child from my grandfather. A bunch of books by Zane Grey. I enjoyed reading his books. As a kid i got a thrill reading a book that was written in 1909 and so on.

Sadly, or maybe not, the Google Book Scan project is going to make books a thing of the past.

One of my favorite rare unknown books is this one, I own two copies from two different years. They have wonderful period illustrations and they're marvelously campy, but there's some good advice mixed up with the campy fun.

LIFE - Google Books (It's called Practical English by The Better Speech Institute of America, dull name, wonderfully fun book!)
(you have to scroll up a little after you click)

I also own another book by the same author, also from the The Better Speech Institute of America, called Personality Development

This advice was taken from that book. Good advice! I should take it to heart. Most of it at least, there's one question that's odd.

And this advice.
