As a few of you already know from my blogs and Facebook status messages, I had a vasectomy on Tuesday performed by the appropriately named Dr Burns-Cox. I'd decided to share my story in advance of the procedure since some had expressed curiosity having considered the same for themselves, so I took before and after photos on my mobile (sorry for the poor quality) so those interested could get a better idea of what I was talking about. I'll post links to these after the story, but feel free to avoid the image links should you find close-up photos of my pendulous testicles and flaccid penis offensive.
The surgical procedure itself didn't hurt in the least, but that was done under a general anaesthetic so I was totally out the whole time. When I awakened after surgery, I found my testicles bandaged and well-supported in a mesh hammock. Still no pain, though. it wasn't until later that evening that I began to notice a slight, dull ache, mostly on the left side, so I began taking the pain meds the doctor had given me and that sorted things out completely (although I did not enjoy the feeling of light-headedness they provided as a side-effect). Honestly, I had more pain in my hand (where they'd inserted the IV anaesthesia port) than in my balls.
Walking was not a problem afterwards and I was up on my feet within an hour of my surgery (I had to pee (oh, and I should probably mention that there was no difficulty nor discomfort in urination whatsoever)). I did notice I was walking like a cowboy (i.e. bowlegged), but that was mainly for comfort due to the swelling. I did take it easy the whole rest of the day, though, either laying down or sitting slouched with my legs spread, both of which provided the most comfort.
The next day, Vix & I decided to unstrap me from the hammock and take a look. Removing the bandages, we found the doctor had made two tiny incisions on the front of the scrotum about 2cm to either side of its central seam. These were sutured with a single stitch in each which would dissolve over the next week or so. The worst bit was the bruising, covering a large patch on the left side of my scrotum and extending half-way up the shaft of my penis. Vix remarked that it looked like she'd kicked me in the bollox. The incisions themselves are so small I expect they'll be barely noticeable once I've fully healed.
After we'd had a good look, I put on some underwear we'd bought to provide some support for my pendulous self (I usually go commando and Vix & I only had one pair of boxers we share strictly for doctor's visits), as having them "dangling free" for the first time since my surgery provided the first really noticeable sensation that something was different down there. Still, the pain never escalated above the slight, dull ache I'd felt the first day, but this was largely unnoticeable unless I was paying particular attention to it.
Although the discomfort was minimal, I still took it easy for three days following my surgery as recommended by my doctor (i.e. no strenuous activity or heavy lifting). The doctor had also strongly recommended I avoid arousal during my recovery days and, although my prurient mind tends to trigger spontaneous erections at both the best and worst of times (not to mention all of the porn I have to ponder for work), my penis was surprisingly compliant (which Vix & I concluded could've either been psychological or just a natural consequence of my medicated state). I did get to find out why he'd recommended this, though, as pulling my penis out of my pants for a piss a bit over-enthusiastically one time did result in a sharp sensation towards my testes.
On the third day I took my first post-surgical shower. Whilst washing, I inadvertently brushed my hand over my stitches and, although I felt them scratch across my hand, there was no scrotal discomfort from the contact and having my testicles hanging freely was no longer an unpleasant sensation. Thus, I dispensed with the undies and went commando the rest of the day and again started sleeping nude as usual.
I decided to stop taking my pain medication on the fourth day since I'd awakened to a comfortable erection (as well as the feeling on my stitches pressing into my right thigh). That afternoon, Vix & I had sex for the first time since my vasectomy and were pleased to find everything in good working order (well, apart from the bit that are supposed to be broken, but we won't know for sure until I go for my sperm count in 20 weeks' time). It was me on top (how rare! (although I must admit a preference for being a bottom)) and the only discomfort was when I got a bit too energetic for my convalescent state and felt my bruised balls banging against Vix' bum. I expereienced a twinge of apprehension as my orgasm approached as I'd expected cumming to feel different after the snip, but there was no change in the sensation of ejaculation nor in the volume of semen produced. As far as there being any change in cum consistency or taste, we've not been there yet (although Vix assures me there will be no difference in either).
Thus, all's well and things are back to normal apart from waiting for the bruises to fade and the two tiny stitches to dissolve. All in all, not an unpleasant experience in the least with only a little bit of mild discomfort for a few days afterwards (which was well managed by the meds my doctor had prescribed). My testicles still aren't hanging as low as usual (honestly, if I had temperature graduations tattooed on my inner thighs, Fahrenheit on the right and Celcius on the left, I'd make for a perfectly serviceable testicular thermometer), but I'm sure the slight tightness will subside as they get over the psychological shock of the mild ordeal they endured (am thinking with my balls here, of course, as I've suffered negligible distress myself).
So, if you're considering the procedure, I'd say go for it! Granted, vasectomies aren't generally performed under general anaesthesia and it cost us a wee bit more to do so, but that was down to personal preference on my part. I did notice on my medical charts that the surgery iteself took less than 15 minutes, so I probably would've been fine under a local anaesthetic as well (and would've had more of a story to tell).
Well, that's the story my vasectomy experience from a post-op perspective and, if anyone thinking out getting the snip has any further question, feel free to ask...
Cheers,
~Reese! :~)
