How to keep your computer safe while browsing

How to keep your computer safe while browsing.

Ensuring your computer is protected against all forms of threats e.g. viruses, trojans, key-loggers, worms, bot-nets or any other form of malware is the only way to ensure your online safety. This applies not only to LPSG, but all websites in general. Accessing content on adult websites can be hazardous - whether it is the ever-present pop-under ads, scripts directing you to other sites, fake virus warnings or other forms of attack. The best way to ensure protection is to use a range of products / techniques.

For Windows Users:
1. Windows Updates - Microsoft release regular patches to fix vulnerabilities in Windows and other programs. If not already configured, go to the Windows Update website for options.

2. Virus Protection - Every PC needs this as a basic line of defence. There are many free solutions available which can be safely downloaded and installed including Free AVG, Avast and Avira.

3. Malware Protection - Although many anti-virus products may prevent malware infection, having a separate anti-malware product to protect against (or at least clean) malware is a good move. Popular products include Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Emisoft Anti-Malware and Lavasoft Ad-Aware.

4. Browser Add-Ons - Web browsers (such as Firefox) have a number of add-ons available to restrict what sites can do in your browser. Some prevent scripts from being run, others check that the site you are visiting isn't a known compromised or 'honey-pot' site designed to lure you in with promises of exclusive content, whilst others simply prevent spam / ads from being displayed. The Top-rated Firefox add-ons to improve your web-safety can be found here.

5. Using a Reliable Web Browser - Make sure the web browser you are using is up to date and reliable/secure. Top rated web browsers include Google Chrome and Firefox. Customise your security settings as well for maximum protection.

You can use the same principles / techniques as described above to ensure your on-line safety whatever your operating system platform.

For Mac Users:
1. Software Updates - Make sure your software is all up to date as security updates are released for Mac's on a regular basis. To check that you have the most recent software and security updates you should run the "Software Update" which is located on the top menu of your Mac computer under the apple logo menu. Click on "Software Update" and (if connected to the internet) any downloads or security updates will be detailed for you to download free of charge. More details here.
