True. Very true. The countries you mentioned are some of the few where the mix of cultures and ethnicities has been somewhat successful. That's the upside of American culture. Boldness and Brashness is not necessarily a bad thing, but does sometimes have it's downside.

What I was talking about was the whole "Toby Keith, we'll put a boot in yer ass, it's the American Way." type of sentiments that can be so utterly pervasive in American culture that are not so prevalent in other cultures.

And, somewhat in keeping with the theme of this thread, about violence against women, and culturally sanctioned misogyny and violence; Yeah, in American culture, as well as in certain aspects of British culture, there is still a great deal of cultural misogyny and unpleasant attitudes towards women.

I'd seen it awhile back, I'll have to google it again, but there was a cultural survey in the UK about attitudes towards women, social issues and the like. The divide between Northern England/Scotland and Southern England was rather sharp. Northerners tended to have much more negative attitudes towards women. In some cases, shockingly so.....

Freedom of information is the key to the world's future. The most repressed cultures and societies have their information regulated by the authorities. Information sets you free; education gives you the understanding of what that means and what to do with it.

My hope is that the people of Iran realize that in time to prevent their leadership from precipitating a war. The people of North Korea have the least access to information.

That is why the boughten media in the U S of A is so scary. Americans are terribly ill informed otw about the rest of the world, and our geographic ignorance is stunning. The BBC World News is considered a step up from the US network news, and it is government filtered as well.

Global village mentality means global awareness of just how badly off some of the neighbors have it. The reasons why? less important than getting us all up to levels some of us consider only human.

I'm sorry for what happened to your daughter, tpd. But the Afghans are not Arabs. And if the man was born and brought up in Australia, he may have learned such things from Australians, for all we know. Or was he raised by persons socialized in Afghanistan? You didn't make that clear.

The media, again, reinforces false assumptions about sex work and
violence against women.

Apparently:

• Prostitutes are not women; they are "bodies".
• Prostitute homicide, as a barometer of violence against women, is not worth mentioning.
• There is no need to warn sex workers of any danger so long as everyone else is safe.
• The fact that a female murder victim is a prostitute appears to be important (victim-blaming FTW!).
• Serial murders of prostitutes are "exciting".
• Women are safe if they aren't prostitutes ("othering" FTW!).
• These women don't need justice; the case just needs to get closed.
• Dehumanizing vulnerable populations is socially permissible.

This sort of apathy and ignorance about marginalized women in today's popular discourse worries me. 'News' stories like this are harmful.

In the worst case of othering that Fuzzy has ever seen, that girl thought that she was safe because the violence was only targeting sex workers.

On Facebook I said I'm glad I don't live in her state if that's how the men get on New Years eve. My friend said, it could have been any state. Now THAT scared me.

Blaming violence on the individual's ethnic Afghan background is as misguided as mentioning the penis in association with violence. To paraphrase Dolf, people are violent assholes because they are violent assholes, and that is true across race, gender, ethnic, religious, and/or nationality lines.

I have no updates but it has been going on for years in spite of international protests.
I don't know if it has stopped. That is the wholesale slaughter of women in cuidad juarez right across the border from texas. If what was reported on the news is correct it is callous beyond belief. Hundreds of women has been tortured and murdered in cuidad juarez and if they haven't stopped it is now probably over a thousand. What is senseless and callous about it is part of the reason they were and may still be in harm's way. There were/are factories operating at night { american owned ?} and the women have/had to walk miles through the desert to get to their jobs. It seemed like nobody cared or even wanted them to get murdered. If women or anybody are getting murdered because they have to walk miles in the dark to get to their jobs its not difficult to find a solution. Close the factories at night. Have a bus pick them up and drop them off. Make them arrive before dark and have them stay until morning. Unless the news reports are errorous its unbeleveable.

I disagree, it's politically correct to assume this because if we don't this leaves a whole can of racist worms open, but people are not uniformly and equally violent assholes across race, gender, ethnic, national, religious and historical lines, they differ, and in some cases they differ a lot. Anyone who's been through WWII -and now I am opening this can of worms but what can I do, it's true, don't shoot the messenger- will attest to the fact that the Germans, and more so the Japanese, where much more brutal and violent than say other nationalities in the axis such as say the Italians. Is this genes, is it culture, is it chance, is it poverty... who knows...
