Why do gay guys insist on using their full given name?

It seems like a gay guy thing to insist on using their full first name instead of an informal shorter version or nickname. It always comes across as pretentious, formal and just uptight to me.

is part of a discussion in the Et Cetera, Et Cetera forum that includes topics on Off-topic postings, current events, rants and raves....

Maybe you would, too, if your name was something longer than Earl.

Nah. I'm a pretty informal, easy kinda guy. A formal first name wouldn't feel right to me.

I use the shortened version. I am also sloppy at home and have little fashion sense.

Please do not check my profile.

I might just be the people you've met. I've generally met more people who prefer shortened versions of their names.

The only Andrews I know (and there are 5) are all straight.....

At least I think they're straight!

And I know two gay Daves.

At least I think they're gay!

And I know a transexual guy named Alex. You didn't mention a transexual thing, but the other transexual I know doesn't shorten her name.

How many "Mike's hair salons" do you know?

God knows there are more "Michael's Hair Salons" out there run by a gay Mike.

My mother was a stickler for insisting that no one shorted our names and would correct family or friends who done it in front of her.

I'm not a fan of having my name shortened but I'll call friends what ever they feel most comfortable with.

OMG!!! I have a FACEBOOK friend that is like that. I have to type out that Nebuchadnezzer long ass name every goddamn time I reference him. I told him that I am giving him the nickname "beyotch" for short. I am tired typing his long ass name out.

I know more straight guys using long versions of their name. I am as gay as they come and use the short version. So I don't know how you found this stereotype???

I hate to say it but every gay guy I know does the long version. I wont name names but I have found it to be generally true.

The problem is that some names get shortened into a form that was mis-used or used in a condescending way by either childhood siblings or well meaning relatives or family friends that can be a problem in later life. This is to some reason a regional thing in the United States. Those coming from the Southeastern United States are more subject to nicknames that maybe would not be great in business during adulthood. Shortened names or nicknames in adult life can be a problem. I do not see this however as a gay issue at all. The facts are that in my personal life I have known more straight men that did it than gay ones.
