British ISPs will block The Pirate Bay within weeks

High court orders service providers including Sky and Virgin Media to block The Pirate Bay in the UK.

Britain's internet providers have been ordered by the high court to block access to the filesharing website The Pirate Bay.
The high court on Monday told five leading internet service providers (ISPs) , including Sky and Virgin Media, to block the site in the UK after ruling that it breaches copyright laws.
The block, starting within weeks, will mean millions of Britons will no longer be able to access one of the biggest and longest-running global filesharing sites.
The high court order provoked criticism from internet advocacy groups, who likened action against illicit filesharing websites to other forms of online censorship.
Jim Killock, executive director of the Open Rights Group, said: "Blocking The Pirate Bay is pointless and dangerous. It will fuel calls for further, wider and even more drastic calls for Internet censorship of many kinds, from pornography to extremism.
"Internet censorship is growing in scope and becoming easier. Yet it never has the effect desired. It simply turns criminals into heroes."
The order to block The Pirate Bay – requested by the major music groups, represented by the British Phonographic Industry – comes as authorities and courts have tightened the net on illicit downloading sites, which film studios and music majors claim are responsible for billions of pounds in lost revenue.
Robert Ashcroft, chief executive of the musicians' lobbying group PRS for Music, said: "We're delighted the high court has sent another clear signal to damaging sites like the Pirate Bay that they will be blocked."
In the order, the judge Mr Justice Arnold told Sky, Virgin Media, TalkTalk, O2 and Everything Everywhere to begin blocking access to The Pirate Bay.
Britain's biggest ISP, BT, also received the court order but has requested further time to consider how to block the site.
According to record labels, The Pirate Bay generated up to $3m (£1.8m) from advertising last October by making 4m copies of music and films available to its 30 million users worldwide. The site has 3.7 million users in the UK, according to comScore.
Mr Justice Arnold said in a written judgment in February: "In my judgment, the operators of [The Pirate Bay] do authorise its users' infringing acts of copying and communication to the public. They go far beyond merely enabling or assisting.
"I conclude that both users and the operators of [The Pirate Bay] infringe the copyrights of the claimants … in the UK."
The high court action follows a blocking order made against the Newzbin2 website in October, after a judge found it infringed copyright on a grand scale.
The case was seen as a green light for rights holders to force ISPs to block access to a number of high-profile filesharing sites in the UK, using the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.

-- I still can access Pirate Bay...., will I can access Pirate Bay from other way? like per example instead of .co.uk I access it from .se?

They can try, but they won't succeed. Too many mirrors sites out there. Even if they did succeed, there are hundreds of other torrent sites out there. More importantly there are downloadable P2P torrents that can't be touched. Ares Galaxy is the best. We must fight this as a planet. If not, the internet as it stands will be destroyed.

"In an interview with the Guardian, Brin warned there were "very powerful forces that have lined up against the open internet on all sides and around the world". "I am more worried than I have been in the past," he said. "It's scary.""

Web freedom faces greatest threat ever, warns Google's Sergey Brin | Technology | The Guardian

We must fight the attempts of the affluent to change the structure of the internet as a planet. Not as a country, but as a collective of worldwide people. DO NOT LET THEM IMPLEMENT AN INTERNET ID SYSTEM ANYWHERE. This will be the beginning of the end of our beloved system of free, effective worldwide online collaboration.

I didnt know UK had a Piracy Party....

All these attacks to open internet, started with american secret services, they interfere with the internet of other countries, theres something going on.

I hope Anonymous could do something....

if they block a website, people can access it if the website are settled in other country?

and if the website always changes their position?

People should do a global embargo to those industries, by not buying nothing from them making them falling to bankrupt, but there is always stupidity from some people who cant make that happen...

That something is called the Bilderberg Group. The used to deny its existence...but now they have their own website.

Bilderberg Meetings | The official website

These people are colluding to shape our planet into what 'they' believe it should be. They aren't elected, yet they are attempting to steer the course of global humanity. The end goal is population control...

Check out InfoWars. Most unaware of this "phenomena," that's what I'll call it in lack of a better term, contend its just a conspiracy theory for lunatics, but it's not a theory. There really are very powerful and wealthy individuals conspiring to secretly change the scope of this planet into what they believe it should be. It's not a theory, the fact that they now openly admit their existence proves it's real. UN, EU, the Euro, NAFTA, IMF, World Bank, Interpol etc are all products of this group.

They mean business folks.

When you get prominent politicians and business leaders on board, it becomes increasingly easy to implement their ideas. It's collusion, and it's highly illegal and dangerous to the sovereignty of every free country and person

What this all really means is that the amount of money being demanded by rights holders is way too big for what people are getting. You dont even need a physical record, tape or Cd any more, just a part of that general purpose computer. So the money they demand is for something which does not cost them anything to provide. Naturally consumers are voting with their feet and not paying. It is also not as if all those people file sharing would have gone out and bought copies at full price in their record store. They download BECAUSE it is free. They would do without if it wasnt.

These old-media dinosaurs really need to get their heads around the new reality. They should be using download technology to promote their wares.

Here's some quotes from an article in the Financial Times last year on "Gaganomics" (I can't link to it, they're behind a paywall).
"Lady Gaga is a true innovator, whose instinctive understanding of how to handle social media and digital platforms has lasting significance."
"Zealous protection of copyright? All of Lady Gaga's video clips are free to view or download on her own website. She likes her fans. They like her back, and buy her material from itunes."
"Catfights in the headlines? Lady Gaga does not do feuds, and happily shares her platform with potential rivals... Lady Gaga is the anti-Liam Gallagher."
"Within just a few years her total income is expected to exceed the total lifetime earnings of rock vertans such as U2"

Gaga can rely on massive demand for her live concerts because she's generated it by her liberal download policy.

For another instance, I've downloaded episodes of a TV series that I've missed so that I can enjoy watching the rest of the run on broadcast. Otherwise I wouldn't bother, and I wouldn't be boosting their viewing figures and advertising revenue.

Seeing a movie director's previous efforts on my computer monitor might well inspire me to go to the cinema to see their latest production as it's meant to be seen - on the big screen. Or even to buy the DVD to keep permanently.

I don't think downloads are replacing paying customers, they're augmenting the potential audience.

This has been heavily evidenced over the years as the total market for EVERYTHING entertainment related has gone up over the last decade, by a pretty solid margin.

To be fair, I can live without TV and Hollywood and industry music. The only reason I enjoy the content today is because I know how to get it for free. The moment it becomes prohibitively difficult to get it for free, I'll find other ways to amuse myself, and they still won't get money out of me. Isn't that the best form of protest?

How is this any different from the colluding activities of any society's elite at any point in human history? There comes a point when the most powerful acknowledge in their competition that they cannot destroy one another, so they work together to preserve their common sources of wealth and power. It's normal. The US was founded by such a group, the French "Revolution" was managed by a number of such groups, and the PR of China was forged by another such group. So on, etc etc.
