do any of you actually like people calling you 'babe'?

Personally, I don't care. If it's meant in a nice way, it's nice. If not, it's not. A name (unless said in an annoying voice) only bothers me when it has a personal-context and is

Personally, I don't care. If it's meant in a nice way, it's nice. If not, it's not. A name (unless said in an annoying voice) only bothers me when it has a personal-context and is used publicly. For example, "Hello, man with concealed vagina!" My secret lady-parts are my own business! Another example is if a stranger says, "Nice arse." I won't thank them, but I won't want to punch them either. I ignore it, I suppose.

Strangers and acquaintances? Not bloody likely.

As mentioned, depends on context. I do loathe seeing "hun" in text. Irritates me to no end.

To me all of those words translate into one of three categories:
Sweetness
Sexiness
or Sarcasm

I've used them for all three. I've had all three used on me. Depends on who is saying it.

Life is a highway....well you know the rest.

Black guys can totally pull "baby" off. Lucky bastards. White guys find it much harder.

Even worse than "hun", is "hunny". A friend uses it constantly. What's wrong with good old-fashioned "honey"?

In the interests of full disclosure, my avatar is not a photo of me.

Pet names definitely imply a familiarity with someone. If you don't have it... don't use them, I say. A fairly good rule of thumb - if you don't know my ACTUAL name, don't substitute it with some generic pet name. There's a relatively good chance that I am *not* your baby, babe, sweetie, sugar, honey, darlin', boo, ma, mami, shawty. Ugh. When I first came to the south, I was horrified by all the men calling me these names. I've gotten used to it from older guys. They genuinely mean it in a sweet way. Younger ones typically piss me off with it. I guess I was just taught that it is disrespectful to behave in an overly familiar way with people you don't know. Also, if you're younger than I am and you call me baby... Grrrrr.

i find that "babe" is just unoriginal. doesn't bother me or not bother me. i've just shrugged it off. boring and unoriginal.

mr said 3 categories---maybe, i don't know. could be--depends on person and use.

I do like the way Aussie men use "love" toward women, as in, "We're just havin' a bit of fun, love." It is breezy and harmless.

Ha! Sometimes, it's meant as a compliment and nothing more. The problem is knowing when it's meant in a nice way. You never know if they're being sarcastic or nasty - so, I just ignore it. I don't want to wrongly thank someone.

This is an excellent example. Let's say I pass Ms Dolfette in the street, step in a puddle and (without knowing) splash her new shoes. She says, "Nice, arse." If I say thank you, the walk-by splashing will look deliberate or at the very least - it will seem that I don't care. Rather than firmly grabbing the wrong end of the stick, I'll keep walking and ignore her. It's not exactly a win-win, but - you know.
