Reminded me of a documentary on the Queen we watched this past weekend... It was wonderful. I love history and totally enjoyed watching the Queen grow up. It was good to know she had a sense of humor and a bit of a rebel spirit in her younger days.

The government is making all these cuts (Schools, Hospitals, etc) yet they waste all this money on this meaningless nonsense. I don't know one person that's excited by this in the UK. You'd think everyone in Britain was struggling to sleep through excitement with the way the BBC reports it.
The UK has been a laughing stock for years with the monarchy, isn't it time we dump them posh lot and get ourselves into the 21st century. Lets leave the 16th century behind, eh?

I can't believe anyone would support or get excited about a family of such dysfunctional spoiled brats that are born into immense privelege and have no relevance in today's world. I think that commonwealth countries like Canada should dump the royals as well. Why she is the head of state here is completely beyond me. The Americans got it right dumping them in 1783.

Benign Monarch such as QEII or unelected President Brown?
Best to leave the potentially disastrous big ego position to someone with little power but the authority they earn IMHO. We played some lead and supporting roles in ensuring that the last century didn't go completely batshit crazy. Our detractors who were part of that madness can frankly fuck off. The essence of Britishness still matters to the gall of many.

American here, we just don't get the monarchy. Ours was a nation built on a person's autonomy and it doesn't matter where you came from, you have a shot at wealth and success without having "blood lines." Well, at least it used to be that way here, anyway. But I digress. Here, if it was a choice between the monarchy and lower taxes or national student loans, our priority would be to cut the monarchy, hands down. We did it with NASA even though I disagree with that.

We're a laughing stock due to the monarchy? Only all the way to the bank, as it generates so much interest and tourism.
Lots of ppl I know are enjoying it + the impending Olympics, and why not?
People need a reason to celebrate sometimes - especially in these times of austerity.
I'm looking forward to the pageant - should be ace and very British.
And this. | |

I'm not much of a royalist but I'm diggin the Jubilee weekend. Everyone seems to come together for it and very little else seems to bring a community together quite like the British Monarchy does for here.
All for it!

If the Queen weren't the head of state, someone else would have to be, whether a president with power (as in the US or France, for example) or a figurehead president (as in Ireland, for example). The attendant costs of having such a person would be high too. But in any case the cost per person in the UK is not really so much after all.
Interesting too, as a sideline, to note that some of the most "democratic" and free countries in the world have a constitutional monarchy as their form of government...
