Was rather fantastic. Few plot holes, few flaws, but overall two hours of friggin' amazing stuff. Must see for fans of Alien.

I saw it last night, and I'm trying to decide on whether it works better if you take it as a stand alone film or as the archetype for the Alien films.

I liked it better as a stand-alone film. It definitely resonates with the alien universe, but it didn't really feel like a prequel to me.

Pretty awesome. I'm suprised Fassbender didn't just use his giant schlong to beat down the aliens.

I LOVED IT!
There were a few problems I had with the film. Besides the main characters of Elizabeth Shaw, David, Meredith Vickers, and Janek, I thought character development was poor for the other characters like Shaw's boyfriend and the two guys that ended up behind and had to stay the night (don't wanna spoil anything for those who didn't see it).
The script was good, but not great. The screenwriters Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof, threw a bunch of great questions at the audience related to science vs. religion and creationism, but they never gave us a concrete foundation to come up with any sort of answers. So the finale seemed incomplete for me. I'm not saying every movie has to spell everything out and give us the answers. I like movies that makes you question things and the director lets you decide what the answer is, and I think Prometheus missed the mark.
So is it a prequel to Alien or is this a stand alone (spin off on the Alien universe) sci-fi movie? It's a stand alone. Just because of the little scene at the end, doesn't make the entire movie a prequel to Alien. The two movies' themes are completely different and the tone is quite different as well.
I loved Ridley Scott's direction and the visuals were EXTRAORDINARY and GORGEOUS! Definitely a very strong contender for next year's visual effects Oscar. Even an Oscar nomination for Michael Fassbender for Best Supporting Actor?
If you haven't seen it, GO SEE IT!!

This movie is great ! One of the best SF movie I've seen these last years.
It's very different from Alien. Alien was more a horror movie than this one. And yes, this film can be seen even if you've never watched Alien before. The story is not really linked, there's just one or two references to Alien, but that's all. In my opinion, Prometheus is way better than Alien.
However, there's a few incoherences in the storyline. I can not explain because I don't want to spoil...
Visually, everything is really perfect. And Logan Marshall-Green is a hunk.

You know, I had a convo with the girl I saw it with, and she feels very strongly that there will be a follow-up film. It makes sense. If it happens, I'm sure it will answer a number of questions (some of which "Prometheus" raised, but also the true intention of where the story is supposed to go in being directly linked to the Alien films or not). For those that have seen it (and this isn't giving anything away to those who haven't), there are some things that can be seen as being archetypal for the Alien films, but the correlation isn't really overt. It'll be interesting to see what happens a bit down the line.

When I heard that the same writer that did the last season of lost wrote it, I decided to skip seeing it.
