Yes, I have the curse. All I can tell you is to keep your blood sugar under control. The results can be devastating. If you can keep a sense of humor about it, you'll be OK. Diabetes sucks!

I am not diabetic but I am a sex therapist. As far as I know, treatment of diabetes and effective management of blood glucose will help to avoid ED. Once damage has occured resulting in ED then that damage is not repaired. All one is doing is preventing further damage.

Chicagosam and Sykray are absolutely correct. You have to be incredibly diligent in controlling your blood glucose levels.

I am not diabetic, but my Mom was, so I did lots and lots of research on the subject. Diabetes mellitus does indeed suck, guys, and diabetics should do everything possible to maintain the best health possible. Controlling diet, and insulin and blood glucose levels is just simply imperative. Getting exercise and plenty of sleep are also important, as they help to maintain that balance.

Existing damage cannot be undone, but future damage can be kept to a minimum with good health practices.

It isn't just your glucose levels and ED that are at risk, poorly controlled diabetes can affect/damage your entire body. Keep up the good work. My Mom lived to age 84, which is ancient for an insulin-dependant individual, so it can be done.

Are there any guys here on meds for high blood pressure AND diabetes type 2 ?....pills, not insulin.

I don't remember which meds are for what, but I know someone on 5 different meds for those 2 conditions.....
His "hydraulics" still work up to 90% volume.....but rarely at 100%.....

What sucks is that 3 of his meds include possible side effects of "decreased libido".

He's only been taking meds for the 2 conditions a little over 2 years....and is 45.

Anyone else here taking meds that themselves can cause problems ?

What exactly is "ED"?

I was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic about 14 years ago and had all the trouble in the world maintaining lower BSL reradings. Last December I had the gallbladder removed and since then my sugar levels are so good that I had to be warned of the risks of a 'hypo'.

ED is Erectile Dysfunction.

My ex is an insulin-dependant diabetic, and diabetics are at high risk for Erectile Dysfunction.

A lot of people don't know this, but Diabetes Mellitus is not only a problem metabolizing sugar, it is also a problem metabolizing lipids (fats). And the two tend to go together. Keep your blood sugar under control, and you keep the lipid problem under control.

What tends to happen, over time, if the Diabetes is not well enough controlled, is that tiny lipid particles become lodged in the capillaries (smallest blood vessels) and circulation problems begin to happen.

It most commonly affects the extremities, the eyes, and unfortunately, the penis, since good circulation is needed to achieve and maintain an erection.

Several things can be done:

1) Control your blood sugar. This can slow the risk of and/or progression of damage to the capillaries.

2) Have regular erections and orgasms (at least one daily, if not two). Even if you're not "in the mood" to masturbate on a given day (or don't have a partner that day), whack off anyway. Keeping good circulation to the penis at all times is important, IMO. I don't know that there's medical evidence to back this up, but it makes sense to me, and I have a medical education.

3) Use cock rings. This can help you maintain an erection (or strengthen an erection).

4) Try Viagra, Cialis, or another Erectile Dysfunction medication. Don't do this if you don't have erectile dysfunction (i.e. just to enhance your sexual performance). But if you truly are having problems getting or maintaining erections, that is what these drugs are there for. And they will probably help a lot, especially if you are in the early stages of ED.

Thank you all for the input. The meds(pills) are working and blood sugars are down to 169 today(from 281). He also has low potasium so that is being treated as well. We are not sure how much damage has been done to the blood vessels since this has been uncontrolled for two years now with the sugars only going up this high the past two months.
Holly, I am in the medical field as well and concur with your statements. You also mentioned a cock ring. Any suggestions on what type since this is new to me?

DC I would be glad if you did PM me. Any info I can get at this point will help. It is funny to be in the medical field and when you get out of your area your are reminded of how little one knows. I deal with diabetics on the athletic field and am diabetic myself(diet & ex. control) but the other issues(ED, vision, and extreme blood sugars) I need to learn more on.

We were using various stretchy rubber ones that we got at a local adult store, but if your husband is exceptionally large, you may need extra advice and/or something special that you can't just pick up locally (i.e. have to special order), especially if your local store(s) don't stock much inventory. Cock rings can be used for multiple purposes, depending on how you position them (i.e. to slow orgasm and/or to maintain erection by keeping blood from flowing back out of the penis once it flows in).

Some suggestions...do a tag search here on lpsg using the words "cock ring" and find out what the well-endowed guys here have to say.

Also, if you can buy it/them locally, go with your man to the store and don't be shy about asking questions, such as "How is this one worn? How can he best position it to get a stronger erection," etc. Trust me, they have heard it all, and neither of you have any reason to be embarrassed.

The people at the 2 stores closest to me know me by sight (and a few by name) ...I won't contemplate what that says about me, but adult store employees are usually quite willing to help and know much more about the products in the store than you can figure out by yourself.

One of the really cool ones we were experimenting with had a little ridged "nub" on it that was made to stimulate the woman's clitoris in face-to-face positions. When we tried it, I found that it was actually too much...the ridges on it would have rubbed my clit raw had I kept fucking my ex while he was wearing the thing. He was going to modify the ring so that the stimulator was 1/2 its previous thickness, but we never got around to it before we went our separate ways.

Another thing that's out there are vibrating cock rings w/nice stimulators for your clit...unfortunately, after feeling them (with our hands) thoroughly in the store, we determined that although the amount of vibration would probably be very nice to me, it would be overstimulating for him. So we went with non-electric devices.

But trust me, there's a lot out there. And in terms of using cock rings when a man is far larger than usual, the men here have posted some excellent advice in previous threads.

Hope this helps.

When I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I was in the best shape of my life. I actually made my Doctor do the test over. But it is a progressive disease, it will never get better, and weight loss becomes increasingly difficult as you progress from monitoring it, to pills, and finally to becoming insulin dependent. While obesity can lead to diabetes, and it is easy to blame people for being fat as the cause of this nightmare, as Cube said body type does not decide it. I am now insulin dependent requiring 8 shots a day. Why am I writing? I want to scare the hell out of anyone to avoid the onset of this disease at all costs. It starts to take over your life and affects everything you do. My Doctors have been after me to slow down my schedule for five years now. Stress aggravates the disease. I am a workaholic and that does not go well with diabetes. I am now trying to find a comfortable way to cut back. If I don't get enough sleep during the week, I can be out for 10 to 12 hours on a weekend unable to get going. Vision becomes problematic. I have my good and bad days depending on where my blood sugar is as to how my close-up vision will function. If I am cut or bruised, it takes twice as long to heal. And then there is the ED problem (erectile dysfunction) which is the biggest indignity with diabetes for a male. This started to happen to me and it is devastating. You start to feel emasculated. It took me months before I finally got up the courage to mention it to my diabetic specialist. I could barely get the words out it was so embarrassing. Fortunately, he was kind and sensitive about it. But at this point getting control of blood sugar is far more important than achieving Nirvana. I won't humiliate myself any further by advertising my batting average, but I will say there was a bittersweet irony in being mentioned in Who on LPSG LOOKS LIKE THEY WOULD BE GOOD IN BED? and knowing the reality of what I face daily. I'm not sexually dead yet, but I shocked my Doctor recently in saying that I was so frustrated with being diabetic and this ultimate indignity of ED that there were days I wish I would not wake up. He wanted to treat me for depression—depression and diabetes go hand in hand—and maybe should have; but I am not ready for the pity party yet, and at heart am a real fighter. Just for laughs, I will tell you that he asked me if I was depressed because this might be affecting my relationships. Depressed?! No, not me! What relationships??!! Do you think I am going to place myself and a partner in a situation that is going to be humiliating and disappointing for both of us? I'm disappointing my hand right now—and it wants nothing to do with me! Why would I do that to another human being? So for now, that part of my life seems to be over. I am going on alone. Granted, I have good days and bad says with this, too. The funny thing was that I was still as vital as I was at 18 until this hit. The damage has been done and now all focus must be in maintaining what is left. So I continue to work on blood sugar control to see if I can get it down. If that can be achieved, I get the happy hardon pills. Yeehaw! I told my Doctor that I wanted the one that would give me the longest erection possible because i plan to enjoy every minute or hour of it. Even a day might be nice! Some of the methods suggested in the posts above do help. Stimulation regardless of ejaculation helps. Cockrings help. Try this one. Sleep. Lack of stress. Exercise. Maintaining a positive outlook on life. Having a supportive network of friends and people who care about you. Being able to find humor in this on your most difficult day.

And a cure for all of us who have diabetes would be nice, too!
