Making his case - or not?

Posted 03-05-2015 at 05:58 PM by Adrian69702006 (Adrian's Musings)

Televised debates between politicians prior to British General Elections are a relatively recent development and some people are rightly sceptical about their value, not least of all because in common with some other things of questionable utility, the idea is an American import. However they have become a feature of the modern political scene and, to use an Americanism, it's one which isn't going anywhere anytime soon! We were therefore surprised to learn that Mr Cameron has declined the opportunity...

The Grey Vote

Posted 02-23-2015 at 06:26 PM by Adrian69702006 (Adrian's Musings)

Mr Cameron has made it known that should the Conservatives win the next General Election he will ensure that the universal perks currently enjoyed by pensioners - a winter fuel allowance, free bus passes and free television licences for those aged over seventy five - will not be subject to any form of means testing. In so doing he has stolen the march on his Labour and Liberal Democrat counterparts, both of whom have said they would introduce means testing. Up to a point we commend Mr Cameron for...

Posted 02-17-2015 at 06:17 PM by Adrian69702006 (Adrian's Musings)

Parliament is currently on half term recess, much to the chagrin of those of us for whom "Today in Parliament" provides a comforting - and frequently entertaining - lullaby as we drift into a state of slumber. We will never surrender!

Posted 01-24-2015 at 03:00 PM by Adrian69702006 (Adrian's Musings)

Fifty years ago today that great wartime leader and elder statesmen, Sir Winston Churchill, breathed his last. Prime Minister during the darkest days of World War II, Churchill was an exceptionally gifted tactician, strategist, statesman and orator. He was also a man of immense personal courage and an iron will.

Churchill famously wrote his own speeches and, in doing so, gave the world a literary gift unparalleled in modern times. He had a way with words and a talent for brilliant...

Defending Free Speech

Posted 01-08-2015 at 05:56 PM by Adrian69702006 (Adrian's Musings)

Yesterday, when the New Year was barely a week old, twelve defencless individuals were gunned down at the Paris offices of satirical magazine of Charlie Hebdo. This wicked and cowardly act was committed, we are told, by religious extremists in the name of Islam. This morning a Paris policewoman was gunned down in what may possibly have been a related act, although at this stage it remains to be confirmed.

There is a perfectly reasonable argument that the exercise of free speech also...
