Posted 4 Days Ago at 11:50 AM by Adrian69702006 (Adrian's Musings)

A week from now, the people of Scotland will have taken part in a referendum which will determine whether or not Scotland remains part of the United Kingdom, the outcome of which could potentially have significant economic, political and constitutional implications. We hope sincerely that the Prime Minister doesn't have reason to regret allowing a referendum which could change the makeup of the United Kingdom to an extent unknown for the last three hundred years.

Until fairly recently...

The lamps are going out

Posted 08-05-2014 at 05:07 PM by Adrian69702006 (Adrian's Musings)

"The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our life-time." So mused Sir Edward Grey, British Foreign Secretary, on the eve of Britain's entry into the First World War. Yesterday evening, in millions of homes the length and breadth of our island home, people paused to recall that momentous event by turning out their lights between 10 and 11pm and just leaving one light on or a single candle burning. In many churches and cathedrals, vigils and other symbolic...

Lord Falconer's Bill

Posted 07-16-2014 at 05:44 PM by Adrian69702006 (Adrian's Musings)

Posted 03-14-2014 at 06:47 PM by Adrian69702006 (Adrian's Musings)

This morning the world awoke to learn that Anthony Wedgwood Benn, an elder statesman and long serving Member of Parliament, had passed away at the age of eighty eight. Mr Benn was very much on the left wing of the Labour Party, a pacifist, a tireless campaigner for the causes in which he believed. He rose to prominence during the Wilson Government of the 1960s, first as Postmaster General and later as Minster for Technology.

We may, with good reason, not agree with much of what Mr...

We will - and must - Remember

Posted 11-11-2013 at 06:09 PM by Adrian69702006 (Adrian's Musings)

Yesterday was Remembrance Sunday when large numbers of people gathered in churches and around war memorials to remember the fallen of two world wars as well as other conflicts since. Those of us who grew up the Nineteen Sixties and Seventies recall a time when the idea of remembrance was falling from favour, a tendency encouraged by the mood of those decades. Although fresh in the memories of our parents and grandparents, to our generation growing up in times of relative peace and prosperity, World...
