Lord Falconer's Bill

Posted 2 Weeks Ago at 05:44 PM by Adrian69702006 (Adrian's Musings)

On Friday, Lord Falconer's Assisted Dying Bill, which would allow doctors to prescribe a lethal dose to terminally ill patients judged to have less than six months to live, is due to receive its second reading and be debated in the House of Lords. Despite the safeguards which we are assured the Bill contains, it necessarily touches on a subject which is both sensitive and controversial. Who amongst us hasn't sat at the bedside of a loved one dying from cancer or known the gradual deterioration of...

RIP Tony Benn

Posted 03-14-2014 at 06:47 PM by Adrian69702006 (Adrian's Musings)

This morning the world awoke to learn that Anthony Wedgwood Benn, an elder statesman and long serving Member of Parliament, had passed away at the age of eighty eight. Mr Benn was very much on the left wing of the Labour Party, a pacifist, a tireless campaigner for the causes in which he believed. He rose to prominence during the Wilson Government of the 1960s, first as Postmaster General and later as Minster for Technology.

We may, with good reason, not agree with much of what Mr...

Mr Grayling's Prison Regime

Posted 04-30-2013 at 04:52 PM by Adrian69702006 (Adrian's Musings)

This morning it was announced that with effect from November, Chris Grayling, the Justice Secretary, plans to introduce measures which will make life more austere for male prisoners. We are told Mr Grayling's plans include requiring prisoners to wear uniform for their first two weeks in custody (we weren't aware that they didn't already) and have to earn the right to perks such as the use of a television by participating in work or education and positive engagement with rehabilitation programmes....

Pensioners & Benefits

Posted 04-30-2013 at 03:48 PM by Adrian69702006 (Adrian's Musings)

Yesterday it emerged that Iain Duncan Smith, the Work & Pensions Secretary, had expressed a view that “wealthy” pensioners might consider repaying those universal benefits to which all pensioners are entitled. We were not surprised by the consternation and perfectly proper indignation which subsequently issued from several quarters. Such a suggestion invites a reopening over the old debate over whether such benefits should start to be means tested or not. Furthermore we are not aware of a mechanism...
