A Freudian slip!

Posted 6 Days Ago at 07:18 AM by Adrian69702006 (Adrian's Musings)

Lord Freud, a minister in the the Department for Work and Pensions since 2010, has "apologised unreservedly" for remarks during which he claimed that some disabled people were not worth paying the minimum wage and should be prepared to settle for only 2.00 an hour. We are glad that he has apologised and retracted his comments, although we confess our bafflement as to what he was thinking when he made them - if, indeed, the noble Lord was thinking at all!

Most of the difficulties...

A wise choice

Posted 4 Weeks Ago at 05:26 PM by Adrian69702006 (Adrian's Musings)

This morning we awoke to hear that in yesterday's referendum Scotland's electorate had, by a modest but sufficient majority, resisted the lure of independence. We sincerely believe that our Caledonian friends have chosen wisely and that Scotland's best interests are served by it remaining a part of the United Kingdom. For a while at any rate we can breathe easy knowing that the legal, constitutional, financial and economic uncertainties which a vote in favour of independence would have triggered,...

Better Together

Posted 09-12-2014 at 11:50 AM by Adrian69702006 (Adrian's Musings)

A week from now, the people of Scotland will have taken part in a referendum which will determine whether or not Scotland remains part of the United Kingdom, the outcome of which could potentially have significant economic, political and constitutional implications. "The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our life-time." So mused Sir Edward Grey, British Foreign Secretary, on the eve of Britain's entry into the First World War. Yesterday evening, in millions of homes the length and breadth of our island home, people paused to recall that momentous event by turning out their lights between 10 and 11pm and just leaving one light on or a single candle burning. In many churches and cathedrals, vigils and other symbolic...

Lord Falconer's Bill

Posted 07-16-2014 at 05:44 PM by Adrian69702006 (Adrian's Musings)

On Friday, Lord Falconer's Assisted Dying Bill, which would allow doctors to prescribe a lethal dose to terminally ill patients judged to have less than six months to live, is due to receive its second reading and be debated in the House of Lords. Despite the safeguards which we are assured the Bill contains, it necessarily touches on a subject which is both sensitive and controversial. Who amongst us hasn't sat at the bedside of a loved one dying from cancer or known the gradual deterioration of...
