The alternative to loosening the skin naturally would have been getting circumcised--considerably more painful and not something I wanted. Actually, this doctor was excellent about making sure I got correct information as I went through puberty and became sexually active.

My mate Keith did an informal survey a few years ago of coworkers and friends in his city in England, and the conclusion was about 70% of guys stayed completely or mostly covered when hard, almost 30 retracted on their own without help, and something like 1 or 2 percent couldn't pull it back easily.

Interesting statistics. I would have thought it was about half and half - but then I probably need a bigger sample !
