OK, first of all last night I was surfing web-sites that were fun but not particularly "up-right." Anyways, all of a sudden, my Micro-soft security
goes off and my computer locks down with a message from the FBI that I
have visited a children's porn site and I must pay a $200.00 fine within 72 hours or be prosecuted. This was wierd, because, kids are not my thing.
There were instructions to use green dot Money Pak and use the special
MoneyPak number - enter it onto the screen and my computer would be
unlocked within one to four hours.
So, this afternoon, I went to the Walgreens, bought the $200 MoneyPak,
and came home, ready to enter the number and be over with it,
When I wiggled the mouse - the regular screen came on, the anti virus pro-tection was at peace, etc. As if nothing happened.
HAVE I BEEN SCAMMED???
Anything like this happened to you?

SAME thing happened to me, man! Same result, too. So glad I didn't send that money!
It's a total scam!

How far will they go with this shit? One must admit there s a bit of an art in thinking and creating this kind of phishing but they are quite a bit an outrage to the human intelligence nonetheless..

Scam.

Just a slight variation on a theme used by virus writers for years.

Which statute were the 'FBI' citing as their charter to behave this way?

None? Funny that, I'm sure no such law exists in the US.

If someone wanted to convict you of child sex offences, which they invariably do if they suspect you of visiting the nastier type of sites and especially if they think you paid (because that confirms you colluded - were aware and deliberately visited the site and using your card is supposed to confirm it as you; but see anything about Operation Ore in the UK to see how this is not necessarily true), they would just turn up unannounced and seize your PC before you had chance to destroy any incriminating evidence.

Sorry to ramble on a bit, but I used to be an ISP in the UK and follow this sort of stuff quite closely.

Thanks for all the input. I found the FBI "fake - fines" after I posted.
OK, next question. I paid the $200 onto the card, but never send the MoneyPak number. Has the money gone to them (scammers) or is it sitting on this card ?
Sorry to be so stupid, not up-to-date with the cyber world. Thanks again folks.

Sorry I don't know anything about this MoneyPak system you mention, but...

...it would be a good idea to make sure all your antivirus stuff is up to date; and run a check or two with other tools just make sure there's nothing lurking, doing who knows what else, on your PC.

Might I suggest if you haven't used that $200 moneypak to apply it to your GREEN DOT CARD(If you have one!), and save it for a rainy day, or when you're a little short of cash.
Speaking as someone who does have a Green dot Master card that those little beauties come in handy for small things like coffee.

Anything that appears on your computer that suggests you enter a credit car number to clean a virus or delete nasty browsing history is always a scam or phishing scheme. Never enter any information unless you are purchasing a product from a legitimate site.

You should also research "rogue anti-virus" scamming to make sure you understand it and don't become a victim.

The money should still be there. Use it soon because green dot cards charge $5.95 a month to just have money on them. Spend the money! Gas, food, etc.
Precisely! And while it's not being used for it's intended purpose, it's still found money usable where they accept it, which is most places.

was a victim of this scam yesterday. Tumblr sites are a vehicle for entry. Total scam. Won't allow you to escape their "fbi" page. Called police. They are aware of it. Don't send money. Call your tech immediately and have it removed. Try rebooting tapping f-8 key.

I originally posted this thread, this f--king scam hit me again.
I was following a link posted on this site.
Anyone think that LPSG could be fostering the scam?
