There is a real, well-researched problem in the US. It's referred to as the Adonis Complex. In American society, thanks to TV, magazines, etc, boys are "taught" was a perfect man looks like. To be acceptable in this celebrity-ridden culture, you must have the perfect face, perfect teeth, tight abs, well-defined biceps, and a perfect cock -- meaning 7 inches limp. Since hardly anyone meets these expectations they are hence ashamed and will hide their shortcomings if at all possible. It's really sad. Tragically, this attitude spreads around the world and other cultures follow. We've lost sight of what being a man is. One silly outcome of this craziness is that many young men now shave their chests, arms, etc. as if they are embarrassed by the hair. How times have changed. We're creating a culture of girly-men. It seems that the only place I can go anymore and see young men act like men is into the midwest farming and ranching areas. Is there anything that can be done? Sure -- but you might not like it: support the Boy Scouts. Not the newly minted, sensitive Boy Scouts, but do it we did in the 50's and 60's. That organization developed men. And we weren't ashamed of our bodies or being nude. We didn't care if our dicks didn't meaure up. Camping and canoeing were what's mattered. In a time before WiII, Playstation, MTV, and the internet, boys were able to be boys and the world was healthier for it. It's like the difference between McCain and Obama. McCain is a tough SOB, and a real man. Obama is a girly man.

OK, showing yourself proudely and embarassing other men with les equipment than YOU is BAD.. but hiding away 'inside' a towel is JUST strange. I don't like to show of, but [unless I'm in a mix locker room] I don't have any problem showing it for all to see.
BUT I think it's a cultural issue. in some cultures the showing of the body, eben in mixed places, is not a problem. for example: in RUSSIA people all attend naked to the steam rooms and saunas. not to over generalize it, but thay are so at ease with they bodies, sexuality and ways of life, they even kiss on the mouth as a cordial salute!

Now that is gross. Perhaps young men today are very apprehensive about being nude in front of others due to the fact that there a lot of pervs in the world. Hell, NBC has a whole series on "To Catch a Predator" (i think it's called). There are some real pervs profiled on there.
With that being said, take a damn shower man. It just is not good hygiene.
It's a crazy world out there....this has been a most interesting thread. I never thought it would go into the areas that it has.

Probably it is a cultural issue, the problem being that our culture has become obscessed with sex. If our culture were not so obscessed with sex, then people would not find nudity so disturbing.
Taste has also gone out of the window. Note the advertisements for Viagra. I'd find it embarrassing to see one of those ads in TV while in mixed company. And now parents have to explain to their 5 year old children what an erection is because according to the ads, a man should seek immediate medical attention if he has an erection lasting more than 4 hours.
Advertisements for bathroom bowl cleaners never used the "T" word or showed the water closet in the TV screen. Now they show everything. Also, movies now take the audience right into the men's room and show men standing in front of the urinals. Is that really necessary?
Let's go back to good taste. And nudity, depending on circumstances, need not be in bad taste.

Perhaps we need to define what a "real man" is.
In my opinion, a real man is responsible, considerate, and respects other people. A person does not have to be a bully, a champion athlete, unwilling to listen to others, or a super stud to be a real man.
This is merely a personal preference and nothing more..nude or no..really doesnt matter.

I am reminded of my experience in high school.
When I was a kid, the usual attire for us during summer was levis and a T shirt. My mother had told me that she wanted me to wear something more substantial than a T shirt so that people could not see how thin I was. Also, at that time, I was smaller than most kids my age.
In gym class, teams were designated by having one team remove their shirts. You can imagine how I felt since I was smaller and was also embarrased because my mother made me believe that I was unacceptably skinny. So, a guy need not be totally nude to feel uncomfortable undraped. Interestingly, when I was a preppy, guys used to say, "For such a little guy, he sure has a big cock." So, I certainly was not deficient in that area, but was in other areas.
At the earliest opportunity, I took up weight lifting, which totally solved my body image problem. But there are parts of the body that cannot be developed through exercise, so I guess that I can see why some guys might feel uncomfortable nude. I'll ring in on this one, as the voice of an "older generation". As I've gotten older, I've reached the point where I could care less what others see, or what they think of my locker room etiquette. I'm in there to undress, shower, clean up, dress, & get out of there. You're getting a glimpse of the future. I doubt they're putting on a show for you. And remember... one day YOU'LL be 75 too... if you're lucky.
If you call raising taxes on corporate America and socialist income redistribution being a real man, then I guess we will be in good company if Obama is elected.

I've had MRSA once before and I'd have to be extremely careful if I go to fitness facilities. It's easily curable however with a common line of generic antibiotics Tetracyclines, along with several other medicines other than penicillin-based ones. I'll probably end up wearing sandals or protective footwear for sure.
As for the whole nudity thing, if you are comfortable go for it. If not, just keep a towel on. It isn't going to bother people that you don't wish to be seen nude or anything. Hell, I wouldn't either if it was all old men in the locker rooms but I've got no problem around younger guys or guys my age at all. I'd let them check me out and I'd probably check out them too. Besides, who actually prefers to shower with clothes on? If I'm at a gym, I'm going to be in the sauna naked and showers naked if I can help it. it just feels good.

The dudes who stare at themselves after doing a set or lift their shirt on the gym floor to check out (and show off) their abs are the ones who would never be caught dead naked in the locker room. They just leave with their sweaty stank crotches. Gross.
society is so sexualised these days its easy to see why some younger people find getting changed in public not as innocent as it should be. I don't think its anyone's business what someone else is comfortable doing, its a public changing room not a gay sauna. Each to their own?
