I've been thinking about doing this for a while, but I'm scared of damaging myself.

I always get the impressions its gonna detach or get a wee bit broken at the base if I use this technique.

Can anyone put my mind at rest?

Start light and work up in intensity and reps slowly and sensibly. It's the best way to make steady gains without injuring yourself.
