Does anyone have any good movies or TV shows that do a good job exploring the topic of sexuality? I don't like movies that just have mindless sex scenes, but movies/shows that fully deal with the subject of one person's (or a group's) sexuality. I'd prefer movies/TV shows that have a good plot (whether mystery, drama, etc.)

A good example would be the movie Shortbus.

The British scifi show "Torchwood" explored it a lot - heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality. The lead character, Captain Jack Harkness played by John Barrowman, was what you might call a pansexual. He would have sex with any kind of being as long as it was legal and his partner had a pulse. Not every episode focused on the sex, but it always seemed to be lurking in the background.

I just watched a show on Amazon Prime that sort of hits some of what you are asking for. Brace yourself. It was "Behind the Candelabra," the Michael Douglas - Matt Damon film about Liberace and his long term affair with Scott Thorson. Yes it is tabloid fodder but what struck me about the film was how the times made Liberace go to great lengths to hide his homosexuality, and how that affected how he formed relationships and the pressure the secrecy put on the relationships. There was also some insight on how being rich, famous, and powerful can distort the sense of self and the effects it has on other people.

Douglas and Damon were surprisingly good, and the period was accurately portrayed. Rob Lowe, Dan Ackroyd and Debbie Reynolds filled out an amazing supporting cast that contributed greatly to understanding the characters.

In keeping to the question from the OP both men were shown as having some internalized issues with their roles in the relationship. Thorson was loathe to admit he was being used or that he too was using Liberace. Liberace felt loved for his money and what he could do to help a persons career in show business, but those were the tools he used to recruit and seduce young men. Thorson, a product of a badly broken home and the foster care system had no sense of what a functioning family was like, except for abstract experiences. He was open to the charms of the older man, as much for his being a father figure as rich and famous.

Liberace liked the idea of controlling and molding the young man in his image - even to the point of having his face altered to give him a son like resemblance.

Thorson developed a serious drug problem which was minimized a bit in the film - but coupled with his insecurities at being replaced with a younger model and Liberace pushing him into sexual acts he did not want to do the relationship broke down irretrievably - even though according to this story both men felt that the relationship was the best one each had ever had.

The sex scenes are mostly implied, with an occasional butt shot of Damon's but sexuality is a key component of the relationship and the pressures that affected it. It is by no means an uplifting, happy story - Liberace died of AIDs and Thorson has been in and out of jail pretty regularly ever since. In fact he was in jail when this film premiered.

The film is no "Shortbus" but it is, in my opinion worthwhile.

Although at first read your post could have been using the word 'sexuality' to mean gender preference ie heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality. However after looking up 'Shortbus' which I haven't seen I know what you mean.
Although I don't watch a lot of films or television (actually none at all) I did used to and one of the films that springs to mind is called "Secretary" which is described as an 'erotic romance' although this is probably too tame a description. The film explores the relationship between a sexually dominant man and his submissive secretary. The film caught me by surprise mostly because, ironically I was urged to watch it by a friend of mine who said it was basically porn, however although there are a lot of sex scenes in it (not straight forward cliche Hollywood sex scenes) they did not come across as 'porn' and indeed all the sex scenes seemed necessary and appropriate to the main point of the film which was the exploration of the BDSM relationship in question. Ultimately I would say that it was about sexuality more than it was about sex and in this sense it was very refreshing. I was looking for a link to a trailer for the film and then found this instead which is a link but oh so much more http://www.secretarythemovie.co.uk/naughtywords/index.html and it has made my day (and it's only 4:37am), so I thank you for that.

The other film I was thinking about was "Betty Blue" which I would say to a certain degree explores sexuality but not to the extent where it is the central theme like 'Secretary'. You may have even seen it already because it is very famous as well as being, I hasten to add, in French, and I know that some people would probably watch "Gone With The The Wind" backwards then watch a film with subtitles. But it is damn good film and therefore the subtitles are easily overcome. When I was younger I was somewhat obsessed with this film, it is artistically shot, it is beautifully poetic and tragic, it has a gorgeous soundtrack, sexuality, madness, more madness and oh the book that it is based on is equally as good if not better hmmmm... I need to see it again
a clip from Betty Blue

Yeah that clip I posted had a lot of the qualities that I mention like artistically shot, gorgeous soundtrack, poetic...
But no subtitles, so unless you speak French it was of no use to anyone... If you do watch it I'm sure you won't make the same mistake as I did just here, because I've practised many years to be as good at making these kind of mistakes and it would be very hard to emulate.

It really is good film, honestly.

Au revoir.
