I just watched a show on Amazon Prime that sort of hits some of what you are asking for. Brace yourself. It was "Behind the Candelabra," the Michael Douglas - Matt Damon film about Liberace and his long term affair with Scott Thorson. Yes it is tabloid fodder but what struck me about the film was how the times made Liberace go to great lengths to hide his homosexuality, and how that affected how he formed relationships and the pressure the secrecy put on the relationships. There was also some insight on how being rich, famous, and powerful can distort the sense of self and the effects it has on other people.
Douglas and Damon were surprisingly good, and the period was accurately portrayed. Rob Lowe, Dan Ackroyd and Debbie Reynolds filled out an amazing supporting cast that contributed greatly to understanding the characters.
In keeping to the question from the OP both men were shown as having some internalized issues with their roles in the relationship. Thorson was loathe to admit he was being used or that he too was using Liberace. Liberace felt loved for his money and what he could do to help a persons career in show business, but those were the tools he used to recruit and seduce young men. Thorson, a product of a badly broken home and the foster care system had no sense of what a functioning family was like, except for abstract experiences. He was open to the charms of the older man, as much for his being a father figure as rich and famous.
Liberace liked the idea of controlling and molding the young man in his image - even to the point of having his face altered to give him a son like resemblance.
Thorson developed a serious drug problem which was minimized a bit in the film - but coupled with his insecurities at being replaced with a younger model and Liberace pushing him into sexual acts he did not want to do the relationship broke down irretrievably - even though according to this story both men felt that the relationship was the best one each had ever had.
The sex scenes are mostly implied, with an occasional butt shot of Damon's but sexuality is a key component of the relationship and the pressures that affected it. It is by no means an uplifting, happy story - Liberace died of AIDs and Thorson has been in and out of jail pretty regularly ever since. In fact he was in jail when this film premiered.
The film is no "Shortbus" but it is, in my opinion worthwhile.
