A few guys have been around long enough to remember swimming naked at the YMCA -but who did you go swimming with ? Your friends, teachers, brothers, fathers, grandfathers? If you lived in a small place you must have seen the people out and about.....was it strange seeing them all naked.....or just what you were used to?

I just remember going to the local swimming pool on weeknights while I was in JR High... and the pool was supervised by a High School/college aged guy who would strip off his lifeguard tee and shorts and swim his laps after the official closing time wearing just his team speedo.

If we behaved, he'd let me and a buddy stay a little bit longer while he put everything away and locked everything up, and we'd strip off our shorts and swim naked... not him, just us.

In the 60's in Jr. HIgh, we had 6 weeks of swimming class in gym. There wasn't a feasible way to take care of swim ware so we swam nude. It's wasn't a secret. Parents knew. Often, the coach had to demonstrate and he swam nude also. Nothing sexual. We were taught lifesaving skills that required us to "partner up" and practice what we were taught. Our coach emphasized the seriousness of the practice and we did as he said. I'm sure that what we learned was put into practice and may have saved a life or two.
Today's society would NEVER condone any school having a swim class of boys being nude. Personally, I can look back on the experience and say that it was helpfull in understanding me and my body. Males are naturally curious about each other, especially during puberty. Fathers don't really talk to their sons about what is happening to their bodies and minds so seeing your classmates in the various stages of puberty helps a young man understand that what's happening to him is not unique. Personally, I was a late bloomer and felt that maybe something was wrong or I would be different. My father didn't tell me anything about what was happening to me so when I saw that there were other boys who were just like me, I was relieved to know that I wasn't a freak. The nudity dispelled myths. The pumped up jocks could no longer hide the fact that they were not as developed as the little nerd that the harassed in the halls. Lots of rumors were disspelled the first day of class. Our coach alway kept a watchfull eye and we knew that he meant business and the last 10 minutes of class were always for "free swim" where everyone could enjoy the water.
I can look back now and understand how swimming class was more than just learning swimming and life saving techniques, for me it was a way to understand myself during a difficult and confusing time in a young man's life. I wonder what today's generation of young men have to help them understand. Internet porn or becoming prey to the Penn State type of situation?

The pool at my club here in nyc (not a YMCA) remains nude. It seems odd the first few times, but you normalize it quickly.

In 8th grade gym class the coach would sometimes take us to the pool for nude swim. We felt a bit strange about it and it was definitely a puberty transition time. The coach did not swim at all. One kid had a cock hanging almost to his knee and he was a bit shy about it because they would talk and tease, but in a good way.

American are so Puritanical. I think they make too big a deal out of the naked body but it does support a huge industry.

What's the name of the club? It sounds like something I'd like to experience.

Always went to the "Y" and swam nude with my dad and brother. I just thought that it was the way we swam there-just normally. I did not have any issues at all. Later, I went to nude beaches (both sexes) and felt completely comfortable maybe because of the earlier experiences. And God knows, I had/have nothing spectacular to show. I just don't think about it, but I do take notice the "big boys" in the shower. LOL

All males swam nude at the Y. It did not matter who they were or what they did or if you knew them.

In High School we were tested for if we could swim 3 lengths of the pool. If we didn't know how to swim we had to take a 9 week swim course and the class was taught in the nude. We were in a gym class during that hour so we had already seen each other nude. No big deal. We were Sophomores (10th Grade). It happened to be during the winter months and the pool wasn't adequately heated. On some mornings the pool was too cold to swim so we just sat on the bleachers nude

Great post explaining why nude is good - i never experienced this growing up but at least as an adult have been able to enjoy the freedom of naturism, and get rid of the hang ups I had re nudity, though as the supply of new members dries up - with younger people not even used to showering naked together - even that is in decline, in the UK at least

In a group situation at the Y, there wouldn't be any unprivileged contact among nude swimmers, and unnecessary inhibitions would be eliminated. But the homophobes have taken all the "natural" out of nudity, and we've added a new layer of anxiety to growing up.

    Amen brother.
When did society change the rules about nudity? Better question is why?
There seems to be a fear of being nude or being seen nude that has evolved in the last few years and I really have no idea how this came about. I don't think that homophobia plays into this situation since homosexuality has become more accepted by the majority of sane people in the US. I don't think that the religious right has the social clout to instlll such a change. So what has made young American men so insecure about themselves and their bodies? Maybe it is the lack of early male bonding starting with father and son and through junior high. Personally, I'm glad I had those experiences as I was growing up and it's sad and unhealthy for those men who didn't. It's okay to see or be seen naked. It's okay to see men naked and realize that there's nothing wrong or nasty or threatening going on.

I recall posting to a thread a long time ago about "old YMCA experiences." When I was an adolescent, my old-style small town Y was one of the very few left I think that still offered nude swimming for males, but only on certain days and times. It was discontinued, because I think they got in trouble for doing it. It was a lot of fun, though. Not only was it nice and "natural" feeling to swim nude, but as a young gay guy, I really liked hanging out at the pool with other naked males. Although still an adolescent, my body had already gone through the main changes, and I enjoyed showing off. My big dick & balls and red pubic hair received some looks and comments, and I liked the attention. I can also recall having a crush on one of the instructors who worked there, who was a really hot looking guy. I think he knew I liked him, but I was still a kid, and nothing ever happened.

A couple of years ago, I worked out at the downtown Y for a while in the city where I live. There was no nude swimming, but the locker room was reminiscent of my old hometown Y, e.g., large gang style showers, a lot of guys of all ages, although more racially mixed than what was the case at the Y in my hometown. For whatever reason, I experienced the locker room culture at the Y to be much more comfortable with nudity than most other gym locker rooms today. There are always a few shy guys, but most men acted like men used to act in locker rooms, without all the weird hang-ups that you increasingly see these days about being naked in front of other men and seeing other men naked. I liked that.

I will never understand why men feel threatened by being naked in fromt of other men. As a gay man, I have never put the moves on any man while at the gym or locker room. Now I have had "straight" and married men come on to me. I was flattered, not threatened.
You see all body types from buff to obese, so what's the deal. Men look at men, it's just curiosity and not a signal to get sexual. I know there are men who troll the locker rooms to get their jollies and if one of these men is oggeling you, you must be nice to look at, so puff up that chest and walk proud.
Men who shower in their boxers or brief need some professional help. A swimsuit I can understand. You should get the chemicals from the pool washed out but boxers, please. Makes me wonder about what they do at home and how do you handle wet boxers when going home. I saw a young man standing at the mirror drying his boxers with a blow dryer so he could put on his jeans. Was he hideing a vagina?

I don't think men feel threatened by nudity. Our American culture has somehow tied nudity together with sexual misconduct. I was recently at a spa in Atlantic City and was asked to put on a paper diaper while sitting in the steam room to "cover up". This spa has a men only wet room. Nothing funny was going on, yet management needed to walk into the steam room and tell a few of us to cover up. They lost a customer...and probably don't really care.

So, we now have men bringing their young sons and daughters into the mens locker room and complaining that nudity is inapropriate. It takes only one complaint from a jackass for management to react.
