I'm posting this here and not in the politics forum because that place scares me.

http://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/249743-senate-battle-over-abortion-intensifies

I'm very confused about how much hatred there is for planned parenthood.

For me it's less about abortion, and more about access to women's health services.

Regardless of a person's stance on abortion, of which is 3% of the services that PP provides, I find it shocking that so many people want to defund the 97% of other services that PP provides. None of the abortions are publicly funded anyway. PP provides screenings for breast, cervical, & ovarian cancer, HIV & STDs, and just basic pregnancy; PP provides birth control pills, condoms, emergency contraception, and sex education to those in need; PP also provides basic health care to men AND women for those who can't otherwise afford it.

I guess I was just looking for your opinions ladies on both sides. I can't post this on facebook because of my job. But is it that bad of a thing ? That this company does one thing people don't agree with so we should defund the majority of awesome things they do ? I just don't get it.

I have found that when it comes to politics in the US, many people read the headline but not the article. Which is to say, that many who oppose planned parenthood don't actually know the full range of services available, and only know about abortion.

I consider PP to be scum, my mom went there when she realized she was pregnant with me and once they found out she was an unmarried college student from a Conservative Catholic family they really pushed her towards getting an abortion... They told her she'd never finish college and that her parents would disown her and she was too young to get married... Well, she got married to my Dad, her parents were not thrilled about the unplanned pregnancy but quickly got over it, and it only took her 1 extra semester to graduate. She's been happily married for over 20 years now and is a successful businesswoman. I get sad thinking about the millions of babies that are killed simply because the patent want to party like rock stars instead of growing up. Oh, and they've never taken any public assistance, not that there's anything wrong with that.
Sorry, I find it hard to believe anything you post.

Fear is a stronger motivator than any other emotion. It's easier to move people with fear than with logic or common sense. And it always appears the fearful are more powerful even though fewer in number.

Excellent question, SK.

No baby has ever been killed by abortion, so dry your tears. That would be infanticide, which is illegal. Planned Parenthood does not provide baby killing. To a 3% minority of their patients, they do provide abortions, which is the termination of a pregnancy, resulting in the death of a fetus, not a baby. For clarification, I would refer you to any high school biology text, or even Google.

For 97% of the women served by Planned Parenthood, the services provided on a sliding scale basis cannot be afforded or in many cases aren't even available by any other means to those women. These are services like pap smears, disease screening, breast checks, and birth control.
When I was your age, I had already decided to get out of politics and started (and tanked) my first small business. I was working on business number two, and a college degree. I made too much money for Healthcare subsidies, and not enough to pay for school, pay my bills, AND buy health insurance. So, when I got my first yeast infection (which came with a confusing companion called bacterial vaginosis) few years later, it was either go to an ER, or go to PP. Well, they couldn't see me right away, so I was treated at a free clinic they referred me to, but then I went to them for a follow-up exam and to get a pap smear. Planned Parenthood helped me, like it does milions of other women, and they charged me only what I could afford to get my female checkups up to date. Unlike the doctor at the free clinic who tried to make me feel bad about my promiscuity, which wasn't even how I ended up I front of him, Planned Parenthood's specialists treated me like a person with the right to enjoy my body responsibly. Years later, those free clinics in NY are closed. I hope the Planned Parenthood will never share the same fate.

Lastly, if you aren't looking down on public assistance, what is even the point in mentoning it? My mother went on public assistance when I was in high school. I got the free breakfast and lunch in school, even in the summer. Our groceries were provided by food stamps and a portion of our rent was paid until my mother was healthy enough to return to work. (Basically, after she re-learned how to walk, dress, bathe, after an amputation and a heart attack.) Before and after my mother's medical leave she busted her ass as a public servant. When she was able, she returned to her job, and we were out of the system. That was 1995, I think. My mother had her first amputation in 1989. Shortly after her return, the city merged the various police departments into one NYPD, and her office was relocated to an old building too old to force to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. For the following few years, until she was able to retire with 20 years, she walked a flight of stairs to get to her desk every. Single. Day. That, after battling the MTA (3 busses, 2 trains) for hours of commute time until she was able to convince her employer (the City of NY) to provide her with a driver to avoid them being sued for moving a legless employee to an office up a flight of stairs. So know that when you think people who have been on public assistance are less than, you're talking about my family.

PP provided me with excellent care when I was between jobs. My Mirena was due for replacement and because of safety nets in place, and the PP fundraising, which I give to annually, I got one for nothing out of pocket. I did leave $100 as a donation. They also directed me to reduced cost mammograms.
The doctor was compassionate and wickedly funny. I want to send her a case of wine to share with the staff.
PP prevents far more pregnancies than it ends. That's responible. They also provide fine care for transwomen and CIS men.

Well, after all, you're perfectly free to 'enjoy your body responsibly', just don't ask the taxpayers to pay for it! Simple!

Actually it was PP who used fear to try to get my mom to abort me... The thing that pissed me off the most was the fact that they tried to convince her that my grandparents would disown her for getting pregnant out of wedlock because they were conservative and Catholic.

Look, I know they don't tell every woman to abort as soon as they walk in, but I'm pretty sure that's what they tell most unmarried college students... Because when said college student does abort and then goes to law school and is making $350,000 a year she will donate to them... Whereas if they went the route my mom did, they would never get those big checks.

That's nice. Bless your heart.

What does that even mean? You're opposed to tax payers helping to subsidize the access to pap smears, something every woman needs, from puberty through menopause and beyond, irrespective of sexual activity? You're opposed to subsidies that make it possible for poor women to get prescriptions for birth control? You're opposed to the publicly funding the distribution of condoms? What exactly are you trying to say? Write something substantial if you're going g to quote me. Don't just regurgitate barely relevant sound bites. Do you have any original thoughts? Are you capable of expressing them at all?

Uh huh.

The great thing about anecdotal evidence is that you're never wrong.
