In the last couple of years, as I've begun to feel more comfortable with own body appearance - I'm not too thin, I'm not too fat, I have just felt a little uncomfortable with public nudity - I've begun to challenge myself a bit more.

I've been to some bathhouses in China. While visiting Scandinavia, I've also been in public nude occasions, including at saunas and nude beaches.

In my own country, I've remained a bit shy. I swear there's a few years of therapy in this.

But tonight I decided to challenge myself and went to a Korean bathhouse. It was a male/female "traditional bathhouse" with absolutely no sense of it being a gay sauna or anything like that. They had treatments and stuff and it was all very traditional.

I noticed however the entire male clientele were clearly gay men. In about two hours, thirty or forty people would have come through and it was clearly pretty cruisy. It made me wonder, in Western countries like Australia and the UK and the USA where we don't really have a cultural history of public nudity - if it's pretty much gay men who go to these places.

At nude beaches there always seems to be a "gay end". Do bath-houses even if they're not gay bathhouses, pretty much attract gay men anyway? Aside from the sports culture of the locker room, is there much of a culture of straight men and communal public nudity. Thoughts?

P.S. It's been good for my headspace to feel more comfortable with being nude in public.
P.P.S There was a guy tonight who was definitely higher-end LPSG material. Hi if you're on this site!

Cool. I wish they had bathhouses over here, Ireland. It's great that you are becoming more comfortable with being nude in public. It can be very daunting. A female bath house. I'd like to see that. Were the ladies walking around nude too? Did you feel threatened by the gays at all? Just wondering.

My own limited experiences with public nude venues here in the US is that the attendance will pretty well represent the greater population of the area. Nude beaches do tend to have a "gay" section, where guys are generally on the prowl, but all the hot springs, spas and coed bathhouses I've been to are a pretty good mixture of gay, bi and straight folk who simply like to hang out nude in public.

I think gay men are attracted to anywhere there are naked men.

A straight American friend of mine who lives in South Korea has been to Seoul bathhouses many times with a straight Scandinavian guy. My American friend has never mentioned gay men in Korean bathhouses; in fact, he's mentioned the presence of heavily tattooed, ex-cons, who more-or-less are Korean mobsters.

That may be, but I haven't noticed any 'gay' activity. Where I live there is a very famous Korean bath house. I have been several times and the atmosphere seems very...I don't know... clinical. Maybe I just don't notice the signs.

Aside from locker rooms, there's the military. Though I never served, it's my understanding that there's plenty of communal nudity in the barracks.

I'm having a hard time picturing these Asian non-sexual bathhouses. Are they like spas?

Contrary to popular belief not every gay guy wants every str8 guy. One of the things i enjoy is watching str8 guys in a gay bar with their girl friends, talk about clingy.

I lived in South Korea for a few months, while traveling and teaching English (on the side) amongst other things. I had an opportunity to go to a bathhouse, I wen't and really enjoyed it a lot and wish there was something like it here in North America.

The bathhouse I went to in Korea was co-ed. However there was a specific section for men and one for women. Generally these rooms have many different water areas. You shower in a gang shower and then head into the other part of the room. There was about 7-10 different water baths, some with 'healing' lotion and jets and different temperatures. There were a few sauna rooms with different heat temperatures as well. Some had special rocks in them which I forget what they are called and they smelled really great. (very soothing) In these places you are naked. The places are used to relax and shower the day away and become clean they are generally really cheap so it saves money on your hydro bill (from my understanding but I could be wrong)

You can then head into the main area (you wear specific clothing given to you (men in orange and women in blue) where you can get drinks and snacks and hang out with everyone men and women. They have a TV room, movie rooms, arcades and computer rooms etc.. etc (there are many families that go). They have rooms just for sleeping one for men, and one for women or you can get your own room for you and your partner as some young couples don't have places to go if you get what I mean. They have heated rock rooms with small pebbles everywhere and that was my favourite room, I drew a ying yang with the black and white stones. It was very relaxing. They also had an Ice room, it was a GIANT freezer with real ice on the walls. It was pretty amazing. After your done you head out and shower again and dry off and do your hair/shave etc..

It was like a mini vacation from the crazy busy life that I had while I was there. I can understand why they have those places to go.

I enjoyed myself a lot and didn't feel uncomfortable at any time, people did stare but I am pretty sure it was because I was white or because I am more of a shower than a grower. :D

I have visited a traditional Korean spa near my house several times. It includes a dry sauna and steamroom, and hot and cold pools.

Plenty of Koreans there, and a fair number of Russians too. When I visit, I'm usually the only "average Joe American" guy there. Haven't detected any gay vibe at all.

Actually it is quite interesting to be there in a different cultural environment where there is no weirdness about men being naked around each other. No towel-dancing nonsense. I even observed a Russian father and son there (both adult men) just hanging out naked and talking to each other - quite refreshing.

I have been to a bathhouse in Budapest discussed here, and I didn't pick up on muc of a gay vibe at the particular baths I visited. I was there with a straight guy...and was careful to pick the non-cruisy baths. It was a great experience.

When I lived in Japan, I went to my neighborhood "sento" or bath house a bunch of times. There was no gay vibe at all that I recall. People were there really just to bathe (the house I lived in had this lame hand held shower with poor water pressure that I just didn't like, which I think is/was common). In the sento there were showers and very hot and very cold plunge pools. The pervy part of me liked being naked in a big open room like that even if no one appeared to be checking each other out (and I was careful not to, because it just didn't seem like that kind of a place, and I already felt like I was standing out, since I was the only foreigner and felt a lot taller than everyone else).

Here's a link to the Wikipedia description of what they are like: Sent

When I was in Japan I used a neighborhood "sento" several times because there was no bath where I was staying. Each evening I would go up the street to the baths, open to both men and women, but separated by gender with a wall between male and female pools. After washing in the shower area you proceeded into the pools area. The men's section had three pools...hot, medium hot, and warm. The distinctive thing about the "warm" pool was that it had mild electrical stimulation and about once every minute a low level electrical current passed through the water. It was quite a sensual moment for men's genitals. Most men were quietly enjoying relaxing together, but I felt a bit self conscious observing that my height and hang were clearly getting attention.

Bathhouse culture varies from country to country. I have visited them in Hungary, Turkey, Russia, Finland, Japan and Korea. For most people, there is nothing remotely sexual about going to the bath. It's a way to relax and unwind, maybe get a scrub or massage, or even do business. It's simply part of the culture. However, I have found that there are always a couple bathhouses which seem to attract gay or curious men, this seemed especially true in Istanbul and Budapest. If you do a little online research, you can usually find out which ones they are. But this also doesn't mean sex would necessarily occur at the baths. It's a place to oogle, make advances, and then go somewhere else. I always find these "gay" ones to be kind of dingy and run down. I much prefer to go to the good ones without any intention of anything sexual. Do not even think this is the like a gay bath or sauna as you would have in much of Europe, the States or Australia with people fucking out in the open...it's not the same thing.

Also be aware that in Japan and Korea, there are baths that don't allow foreigners and ones that do. Check first. Actually, this segregation sometimes actually applies to gay bars and meeting places as well.

I enjoh being naked just for the sake of it. And it's even more liberating to be naked around other people without it being sexual. It makes you realise how warped some of our overly modest cultures are!

Well if you're ready to get your dick sucked, make a squirt profile and start having some fun with your nudity!

It used to be that bath houses were a sort of man's club in China. These places were not sexual in any way or form.

In many cities - including Beijing, the capital - the old houses did not have attached bathrooms, so the people would go to a bath house to get themselves cleaned. By now, all the new apartments etc. have attached bathrooms so the bathhouses are redundant and have closed down.

The older Chinese men rather lament the passing of this tradition. I am inclined to believe many of these men used to use the bath house as a refuge from their wives!
