A step in the "right" direction

All right. Maybe I took a step in the right direction today with this situation. First of all, it will be easier if I give this woman a name. I'll call her Marjorie.

Tuesday Marjorie said, "Hey, I'm going to grab some breakfast. Want to come?" and I said yes. It was a grab and go, so it wasn't like we sat together. But--yes, I did accept her invite.

Today I got home from work, and among other chit-chat, my wife asked, "Did you take a coffee break with Marjorie today?"

"No. Why do you ask?" She's never asked that kind of question before, that I can remember.

"Because you needed to borrow some money this morning for your coffee break." Usually I take a snack from home.

"Oh. No. I meant to run over there and get something but I never got the chance." Which is totally true. And--this is the important part--I thought about asking Marjorie and decided not to ask her.

I'm not sure if I understand what you've described here:

1) You borrowed money from your wife for a coffee break.
2) You grabbed breakfast with Marjorie.

Did you grab breakfast instead of having a coffee break? Where did the money go? Did you mention the grabbing of the breakfast?

In what way have you taken a step in the "right" direction?

Yes. I was rushing out the door and didn't have any cash in my wallet. She said, 'just take some from mine.' She tends to keep cash on hand. I tend to live by the card.

Yes, but not on that same day.

The step in the right direction was that I considered asking Marjorie to go on the day I borrowed the money, but chose not to. I think that's a step in the right direction, isn't it?
