I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008, caused during my USMC tour of duty in RVN. I had a urologist, whom I saw on a regular basis, that I liked. I was called at home to be told that my urologist had left, and would I like to see another urologist in the clinic or go elsewhere. I said I would like to see another urologist if possible, was assigned another urologist, and was scheduled for an appointment. I arrived at the clinic, checked-in, and waited for the urologist in an examing room. There was a knock on the door, a woman entered, and then introduced herself, 'Chris, I am Pam, your new urologist.' She was a slightly plump, young, Oriental-looking urologist. We shook hands and exchanged the usual pleasantries. She sat on a stool in front of me and said, 'First, I will do a complete frontal exam of you. Is this acceptable, Chris?' 'Yes,' I said, 'that is acceptable to me.' She asked me questions to become familiar with me, why I was there, when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, how I felt, etc. She then asked if I had any problem or complaint. I told her that I had had pain in my groin since I had had prostatitis after my last biopsy in 2010. 'I'll check for that,' she said as she reached for blue examing gloves to her left. 'Now I will examine your penis, testicles, and scrotum. After that, I will examine your prostate. Drop your trousers!' She moved closer to me at eye level. I dropped my trousers and boxers, as she reached for my genitals to examine them. She thoroughly examined my penis and testicles, as well as my scrotum. 'Turn and cough,' she said as she examined for hernias and groin pain. She pushed and pulled, though gently, trying to find where my pain originated, to no avail. Finished, she said, 'Turn and rest your elbows on the table behind you.' I did and she proceeded to administer the most thorough prostate exam I have ever had. I felt a fullness in my groin, as she palpated my prostate, a fullness that turned into a complete erection with pre cum on my penis. I felt as though I would explode, but I never did. This exam lasted about a minute; it was not the 'quick-in-and-out' that is the usual prostate exam. She took her time, not hurried; she actually examined the prostate and surrounding areas of the prostate. She took her job seriously and did a most thorough exam. Finished, she withdrew and said my prostate was small, smooth, and soft to the touch, not hard, which is good. She gave me Kleenex to clean myself and noticed my erection with a smile. She said my erection told her my equipment was in good working order and that it was normal during a prostate exam. I told her that I had never had an erection during a prostate exam before, that her exam of me was the most thorough and complete exam of my prostate that I had ever had. I was very impressed with her exam and professionalism. She thanked me for my complement. She said that my groin pain was probably related to my prostatitis and we'll watch it carefully,
that my prostate was fine, and she wanted to see me again in 6 months. Alas, she left for another practice.
