My sixth day of work this week, which I had been dreading due to boredom potential and mild annoyance that I had to give up a Saturday to go to a class, ended up being the best day of my work week. I became a fully certified, card carrying flagger/traffic controller. The class turned out to be surprisingly informative and enjoyable.
In this area of the country, certified non-union flaggers can have a starting wage of as much as $30 an hour. Way above what I am making as a crew supervisor......therein lies the tiny dilemma.
Do I want to work just for the money? Cos long hours standing on a highway being screamed at by irate motorists in any and all weather doesn't sound like a job one would actually enjoy.
I needed the certification for my current job, to protect my crews when they are working in traffic- and at least there are other facets to the job as well that provide internal reward.
So, I ask myself- "self, do you want to remain in a lower paying job you like and have passion for, or do you want to make a bunch of money and retire early?"
I know what I'll probably do, is think about it for months, drive myself crazy- look at job listings 'for the heck of it' and end up either staying where I am or leaving in a spur of the moment pique.
Hey. I'm just glad to have a job, now I even have a choice!
