Car Hunting

A friend of mine is taking me out to go look for a car. I found one online that I can afford, and it seems like a great car for me.

I've never bought a car before, so I'm afraid of all the stuff that's involved with it. If I end up deciding to buy today, I'm also worried about all the signing stuff. It's a big deal, and I've never ever done this before.

I'll keep ya'll updated.

there are lots of things to consider when making a large purchase like that. You may want to go check it out, find out what the TOTAL cost is and sleep on it before you sign the papers. You also may want to get your own financing ahead of time, dealers usually mark that up too. Good Luck

too late to post? Red Scrotum gave good advice~~

check interest rates before you go to make sure you get the best rate. Do you know your credit score?
Good credit gives you a better interest rate usually

Also you should do homework online to check the going rate for the car to make sure you don't pay too much for it
KelllyBlueBook is a great site for new and used cars.

You should take it to a reputable mechanic or someone who knows about cars to look at it under the hood to make sure there is nothing major that you will need to put more money into after you buy.

Ask if the car has been in a major wreck or had major damage (to the frame, motor, etc.)

Finally, don't forget the "add-on" tax title , etc. and call your insurance company to add your car to your policy asap.

good luck

I just purchased it today. I brought it to a mechanic before I paid, he said it was in excellent condition, there's a minor thing that needs to be replaced, so I'm gonna go in on Monday for a second opinion, because the guy I bought it from had the receipt for that exact part, which he already had replaced just the week before. I was able to pay cash, no bull shit extra stuff, he didn't try to con me.

More or less it was like buying from a private owner. Overall it was a good experience.

My only complaint is that the car stalls if I turn it on and try to drive away right away. I think I need to let it run for a few minutes before I drive it, because when I do, it's fine. I googled that, and a lot of the people said that usually means there's gunk in the pipes, but that can be cleaned out easily.

Again, I'm bringing it to another mechanic on Monday to have it checked out once more and see what they can do about it stalling. When it stalls, I literally just have to turn the car off and turn it back on, and it's, again, only done it when I tried to drive off without letting it run.

Try putting a fuel injection cleaner or gasoline additive into your tank (check with your mechanic for the best to use) and use at least mid-grade gas.

Hopefully that will help reduce the stalling. Is it cold weather where you are? Many cars need time to "warm up" in cold weather...

just a couple of thoughts... and congrats on becoming an automobile owner...
