Changes in food

So I hate the word ‘DIET’!

I figured out that I was going to simply change what I ate. My old food intake was heavy on carbs and junk food. I rarely cooked, and if I did - I ate far too much in one sitting. I used to say that cold spicy pizza was the breakfast of champions! (Which it’s not, btw!)

Breakfast used to be at least 3 or 4 slices of toast with 2 glasses of OJ. Lunch would be a sandwich, more juice and crisps (chips for my US friends). Evening meal would be a pizza, Indian or Chinese takeaway. Big roast on a Sunday too. Finish off the day with a chocolate bar or two!

These days, I’ll drink a pint of water just after I wake up and I’ll either fast until 11ish, then have some porridge made with boiling water and salt - or just wait until lunchtime. This would probably be a half a pitta bread with hummus, some cherry tomatoes and some ham. Evening meal is probably grilled chicken or turkey steak served slightly warm with a big salad. I only eat red meat perhaps once a weeks in the form of a chilli or pasta bolognese. I probably have a steak once a month, again served with salad and roasted squash.

At any time if I feel hungry, I drink another pint of water and wait 10 mins. I read somewhere that hunger and thirst can feel the same - so no harm in drinking water to rule out thirst first - eh?!

I also discovered the benefits of knowing your BMR via an online calculator. When I’m working out - I need about 3,200 calories a day. Now that’s loads to enjoy!

Sure - I still eat pizza, and I still eat a roast in the winter on Sundays, but I watch my portion size. I’ve noticed that since eating less, I get full quicker. Also - if I eat the protein part of the meal first - it satiates me as I go round the plate.

So - I’m not on a ‘diet’ - I’ve just changed what I eat!

Sounds like a plan! You could substitute the porridge with a lower carb protein bar if you need something to go.

It is a good idea (as you've stated) to eat each course of a meal in order of carb value, lowest to highest.

When you get to the last, highest carb value course, it is likely that you won't want to eat as much of it.

Good luck my friend!

What you said about steak hurts, we grow steaks so our horses have something to chase. When they get big we sell them and get little ones again. Think of all the horses and kids who will be stuck with full size beefs no longer running away but instead charging them. Eat steaks for the kids man.

I've also read about the hunger/thirst confusion so, like you, I reach for water or a no-calorie drink instead of a snack. I also heard that if you eat too quickly and don't chew your food enough, you don't feel satisfied. It sounded a bit far fetched to me, but I analysed the way I ate and, sure enough, I realised I was gulping down mouthfuls of food without really chewing, just to get that satisfying feeling of being "full". So, I made a conscious effort to slow right down and really chew each mouthful before swallowing. I know it sounds crazy but it actually seems to work. I feel fuller sooner, and actually eat less than before. It's difficult to change the habit of eating fast, particularly if your life in general is quite frantic, but it has certainly worked for me.
