Getting healthy #2020

Ok, so listen.

None of this New Year, new me shit. That isn't what I am trying to do here - that is simply a coincidence of timing.

But I need to get my ass in gear any thinking about my health, and myself - physically and mentally.

So - help out hivemind and riddle me this.

There are two things I want to accomplish - and I need to motivate myself to do it alone.

  1. I want to lose weight, slim down and tone up.
  2. I want to start running.

The problem is - I don't know where the hell to start with either.

I've got a gym membership that I always make excuses for not using. In a gym, I wouldn't know where to start - everything intimidates me, and so does everyone.

Running, the last time I went, I was so demotivated by how badly out of shape I was - I never went for another one.

Now I'm not saying I'm hugely overweight or anything, but I could happily lose a stone or two.

So open to all suggestions on how to start.

Well dude, you're paying for a gym membership you are using. You are paying for something you're not using. Motivate yourself into the gym. If I'm paying for it, then I'm using it.

Get in there and watch what others are doing. Go early mornings if you go to a 24 hr gym, before the 5 o'clock crowd starts coming in. No pressure only a handful of people in there at that hour. It'll give you access to all the equipment plus you can watch how the other men are doing it.

Don't be afraid to ask for help or advice or assistance. They'll be only to glad to help you out. The only way you are going to start is to take the first step. It's the hardest step just stepping into the gym. Once you're in there things will start to fall into place. You'll learn routines, techniques, and basics. You'll balance it out once you get in there.

As far as running goes get on the treadmill and run 30 seconds then 45 seconds the next day. Baby steps man. But get in there and do it.

If your gym has any group exercise classes, just go to one. I go several times a week and am usually only one of 2 or 3 guys in a class of women -- I think that actually can scare off a lot of guys but the classes are great. And you don't need to know anything since the instructors guide you through it all. If you're self conscious, stay in the back but better yet, force yourself to go up front and just go for it. In no time you'll be looking forward to that exhausted feeling you get from a good workout. Best of luck to you, it's up to you now.
