Hope Springs Eternal . . .

Hope springs eternal in the human breast;
Man never Is, but always To be blest:
The soul, uneasy and confin'd from home,
Rests and expatiates in a life to come.

-Alexander Pope,
An Essay on Man, Epistle I, 1733

I went for my second opinion on Monday. Thank God I did! My nice small town ob/gyn wanted to rip out my uterus (e.g. hysterectomy) just because I have fibroid tumors and painful heavy periods.

The new doc passed me off to a new associate which kinda annoyed me until she came in and she was totally cool. Turns out we grew up 3 towns away from each other in New Jersey; and when I was working on my 2nd masters @ UMass-Lowell she was doing her residency in Boston, MA.

Now I know those of you born and bred in the south will take umbrage to this, but I was feeling a lot better knowing I had a good northern trained doctor.

Anywho I told her everything the first doc had said, explained my aches and pains, etc. Then she said that if I didn't want a hysterectomy there was no reason to discuss that. Hallelujah! What she did do was review my options and the possible outcomes positive & negative of each one. My best option is actually something the first doctor never mentioned. The Mirena IUD. Now as some of you know I have not been a fan of any IUD because of a tragic incident involving the mother of a good friend back in the 1970's. My doctor explained the differences between the old Copper T and the newer IUD's. I'm still not thrilled with the idea of one being placed inside me but: The Mirena IUD will reduce the length of my periods, minimize the very painful cramps, and most importantly shrink my fibroids! I go back on Monday for a follow up pelvic and abdominal ultrasound and after that they will place the Mirena IUD. She said it should only take about 6 months to shrink the fibroids sufficiently to prepare my uterus for a safe pregnancy. At that point we can discuss AI/IVF/ and if necessary donor sperm.

I went in expecting confirmation of my worst fear and came out with a new hope.

After we left the hospital mom and I went to the Lenox Square Mall for lunch. We ate at Panera Bread and then browsed Macy's and a few other shops. We both purchased different red nail polishes at Sephora. I am in love with the Sephora, Rouge Luminaire nail polish! It's perfect for fall and winter. I haven't even seen a Panera Bread or a Sephora since I left New Jersey. It was like a blissful taste of civilization.

When we left the mall we got lost trying to get to my cousins house who lives just south of the city. I really didn't want to go because I had only gotten 3 hours of sleep the night before and I was tired and cranky. Plus, it never occurs to them to offer refreshment unless it's a holiday. :irked: However, the bonus was that my fave little cousin was home from school by the time we got there. I got to play on his trampoline out back and he showed me his newest LeapFrog toy. {Note to self: Speak to his mom about getting him more toys that are just fun and not always educational} My little 7 yr old genius also explained photosynthesis to me while telling me about each tree in his backyard.

Since I had the audacity to ask what was for dinner my aunt took mommmy to her seafood guy and they brought back blue claw crabs. YUM! Something else I hadn't had since I left Jersey. I love our little neighborhood; but I hate living out in the sticks. That was my Monday, September 22, 2008

So glad the new doctor was able to offer you a better option NJ. I've got a Mirena coil for contraception but over here (so my doctor said) it's actually used more often to control heavy bleeding and other unpleasant girly stuff than it is for contraception. It was the best contraceptive move I've ever made.

SpoiledPrincess, I know you had mentioned Mirena as a great contraceptive choice for women before. Silly me ignored you.:redface:

Thanks for the support Jason, Mr. Snakey, Unabear09, and PrepStudinSC. If only men like you existed in the real world . . .

I love the soups at Panera Bread they are always so tasty.

Glad to hear that everything went well NJ! Must be a HUGE weight off your mind, for sure!

WhooHOO! Thrilled for you, babe.

And hey - don't know about Sephora but there's Panera in Charleston too - hint, hint.

Thank goodness you talked to the second doctor. SO many women have had unnecessary Hysterectomies for just that kind of thinking. I hope this new procedure really works for you, PA.

very good news....just remember that medicine is a practice, much like life there are no guarantees...keep close watch on your conditon..follow up with doctor....and good luck on getting pregnant...should this be the main objective, your clock is ticking on the viability of concieving and carrying to term...much luck and prayers to you dear...

GREAT NEWS ... man, I am so glad to hear that you have reasonable options.

Next time you're at Emory, feel free to come check out Decatur Square, just a few minutes away. I think you and your mom might like it. Cool little place with a small-town feel in the middle of the city. "Where Mayberry meets Berkeley."

I wonder why they didn't mention a shot of "Lupron" as a way to cease the periods and shrink the fibroids. I had this option and while it does both of those things it will also put you into a menopausal state which isn't so bad if you don't mind not having periods and "stuff"!
