It’s often said in jest in the Army and other services, but there is some truth behind it. The more masculine the environment, the more gay shit gets. Guys hanging out naked, playing gay chicken, sharing porn, etc. And when you’re deployed and with insular all-male communities it gets even gayer. There is no more modesty, for the most part. Those who are shy will save their jerking off until they are in the port-o-shitter. I could never do that though. Who the fuck wants to jerk off in 120-degree heat in a box that smells of shit? On my deployments I always made sure that my men knew that that wasn’t an option for me and that they needed to get used to the idea of me regularly taking care of business. Most guys never had a problem with it. Plenty enjoyed it. If there was a tent, or a shack somewhere it usually got dedicated to jacking off. It wasn’t private and a few guys could be in there at a time with the porn, but at least you knew what you were walking into. Plus, every guy jacks off on guard duty. It’s a great way to pass the time and stay awake.

Bringing porn to Iraq or Afghanistan was technically against the rules, contraband. But everyone did it. If you were the guy with the good laptop or (in the earlier days) a DVD player, and the good porn then you could be pretty popular. Meeting up with other units for a day or two often included an exchange of movies and porn between troops.
In 2004 I was at FOB Casino in Samarra, Iraq we were quartered with an SF Team from 3rd SFG and 25th Infantry Division for a while. The regular infantry troops and the SF Soldiers were kept pretty separate, but with my position I was sort of a bridge between the two. The base had once been a hotel, and there was a small office behind the front desk that I used for work to run operations. Scott, the team leader of the SF team was friendly with me and in the first week he started coming down. He actually interrupted me during a jack off session early on, something he picked up quickly. But I’ve never been ashamed of that shit. He was going to excuse himself, but I told him it was fine. We chatted about porn, and I let him look through my DVDs, but I’d forgotten that I had a gay one in there. Turns out he was into it, and we sat back and jacked off together. After chow that night he pulled me aside and asked if he could borrow a movie, said he had some to trade. We went by the office where I kept my shit, and a few minutes later we were fucking. I was at Casino for about three and half weeks, and actually managed to have a good time with Scott. I ended up running into him at Bragg once, when he was with his wife and kids. He was great, friendly, and introduced me to his family. I’m guess he was about 80-90% straight. But there are always those memories.
