Leading by example

Today the Prime Minister announced that he intends to curb the salaries and bonuses of the highest paid civil servants, move a number of public sector posts out of London in order to eliminate the need for "London weighting" and downsize Whitehall. On the surface of things this sounds good, but it is a blantant piece of undisguised electioneering, designed to tap into the current public mood following the consternation caused by the stated intention of some bankers to pay themselves decently. As the world knows only too well it has recently been open season on the bankers, with threats and counter threats traded between Westminster and the directors of a well known bank. By going down this particular route, under the pretence of safeguarding 'frontline' services, Labour is not doubt seeking to re-engage with the long abandoned working classes. Mr Brown clearly imagines that robbing the "haves" will somehow impress the "have nots" but as a strategy it is clearly very risky and we are certain that it's likely to fail. This working class voter certainly isn't impressed. Furthermore we know very well that promises can be made and then broken six months down the line after a General Election has been fought and won. If Mr Brown is at all serious about public sector pay restraint we consider ourselves entitled to ask whether or not he intends to lead by example, cutting his own salary and those of his cabinet colleagues. We will not, however, be holding our breath.
