My brother has MRSA.

My brother was diagnosed with MRSA back in late November or early December. He had the kind that infected his skin, and he had abscesses on his arms, etc. He was given antibiotics, and the abscesses went away. I guess everyone thought that everyone was okay, and he went on with his life. About three weeks ago, he started having severe kidney pain. He doesn't have insurance, but he was able to get into the free health clinic pretty easily because he's HIV+. They tested him several times over three weeks and everything came up negative, but he had white blood cells in his urine. Two days ago, they sent him to the emergency room and after running MORE tests, they diagnosed him with CA-MRSA (community acquired methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus). Apparently his earlier bout with MRSA didn't go away, it just spread to his kidneys, and now his kidneys are filled with abscesses. So he will be spending a full week in the hospital, on a heavy round of antibiotics. There was also discussion about going into one of his kidneys with a syringe to remove the fluid from the largest of the abscesses. We'll see, though. The two main things that bother me most are his HIV, and the fact that he's had this for so long and no one knew. I hope he's going to be alright! It's times like this that make you kind of evaluate your relationships with people. My brother and I get along on the surface, but in all honesty, I have so much anger and hostility towards him. *sigh* I need to work on that one of these days. Anyway, I just thought I'd share that. I might go into more detail about my issues with my brother another time. We'll see.

Sorry to hear this Meg, hope they soon treat it properly, and make sure you take all the proper precautions when you go to see him, we don't want you getting ill.

Megs, I am so sorry to hear how sick your brother is! I will keep him, you; and your family in my prayers.

I'm very sorry Meg. Try to be with him as much as you can. He'll need and appreciate the support.

Sorry to hear that, Meg. Just try to be there for him even though it's uncomfortable. I'll be thinking good thoughts for the both of you.

Meg, I'm sorry to hear about this. We're gonna say a prayer for him tomorrow morning. For now, bury the anger and just be there for him.

Wow meg, sorry to hear it.

However, people up and die sometimes, and it's a bitch if you haven't finished something with them yet.

Don't wait.

There ISN'T always a tomorrow.

He needs you, meg. Plus, he may not say it, but i'm betting he appreciates your concern for him. I agree with Milf, take the time to go see him and talk to him, just in case. Plus, maybe you will get some laughs out of him.

So sorry to hear this. I'll keep your family in my prayers. I agree with the others, be there for him, you never know what tomorrow will bring. We'll be thinking good thoughts though.

I'm pulling for you Megs. You know my brother and I didn't talk for 10 years, but once we put the past into perspective and mended fences, life was so much better for both of us.

If you need an ear, you have the number babe.

As always, you are in my prayers.

As a long-term survivor of both MRSA and HIV, I'll just offer these words of encouragement:Science is forever expanding the bounds of the possible.

I sincerely hope that your brother makes it through this, and that you and he have that series of talks to repair whatever has fractured your relationship.

Meggie,
I have no words, only a lot of love and hugs. I am so terribly sorry to hear about your brother. My thoughts and prayers are with your brother, you and the rest of your family.

I am here for you if you need someone to talk to.

Love ya hun

Thanks for your kind words, everyone, I appreciate it! They went into one of my brothers kidneys today and removed about 6cc's of pus from one of the abscesses. The others were too small to worry about. He's been on antibiotics for a few days now, as well. They're going to give him another cat scan tomorrow to see how everything is going. That's about it for now!
