NJQT466 Medical Update

December 22, 2008 was my post-op appointment with my surgeon to discuss the outcome of my surgery. There was good news and bad news.

The bad news is I have a uterine fibroid slightly smaller than Montana. I will need an abdominal myomectomy which has been scheduled for March 2009.

You may recall I was perturbed that the two ultrasounds I had in the 60 days prior to my 12/2/08 surgery didn't show this fibroid. I was concerned that the doctor had mixed up OR reports, especially since he told my mom I needed a hysterectomy when I was in recovery, but didn't say diddly squat to me. :irked:

Well, it turns out that because I have a retroverted (tipped) uterus and the location & size of the fibroid when they did the transvaginal pelvic ultrasounds they missed the fibroid. It is located at the back of my uterus and takes up a little over 50% of my uterus. This fibroid is so big that the ultrasound thought it was part of my uterus! :yikes:

Now for the good news. I was given two options. Hysterectomy or abdominal myomectomy to remove the fibroid but leave the uterus in tact and able to carry a baby to term. I chose the abdominal myomectomy. Yup, that's right even with this meteor in my abdomen I can retain my fertility.

My doctor informed me that this is major surgery and will require an overnight stay in the hospital. Recovery will take 4-6 weeks. After this he said I need to be prepared to conceive a child within 6 months. He also mentioned that I will need to schedule a c-section when I do conceive. That's fine by me as episiotomys scare the hell out of me. Also, I get to retain the tightness of my va-jay-jay.

I can't wait for this year to end. 2008 has sucked eight days to Sunday. I am so ready for 2009 I could weep.

Continued prayers and good wishes to you, NJ, as you weave your way through this medical nightmare maze. C'mon, March! And four to six weeks of recovery? That IS major surgery.

Plus ... I totally agree with you on your evaluation of 2008. I'm more excited about New Years than I am about Christmas this year ....

I trust that 2009 will be a better year for you and the rest of us.

I'm glad you chose to retain your fertility. Seeing my two children being born confirms the fact that there is a God!

Heal well and live life to the fullest.

NJ - a word to the wise. Don't be so fucking glib about a c-section. An episiotomy is but nothing compared to a c-section - and most women can, and do, regain the full tightness of their vaginas after childbirth.

A c-section is serious fucking surgery. You will probably lose all surface feeling from your naval to your pubic mound for years (mine is only just coming back now, and it will probably never be the same). It makes recovery from pregnancy a MUCH longer affair. It makes getting your pre-pregnancy tummy back virtually impossible. It carries far greater risks than a sore perineum or a temporarily flappy cunt - you can end up with a twisted gut for example. I came close to death, ymmv. IT HURTS LIKE FUCKING HELL. It makes looking after brand new baby so much harder. It leaves you with a big fuck-off scar all across your tummy.

You may not be able to avoid the c-section if indeed you do get pregnant and deliver that way next year - but trust me, once you have had one you will end up wishing you'd had an episiotomy and had to up your kegeling three-fold. I sure do.

[ManlyBanisters:QUOTE] NJ - a word to the wise. Don't be so fucking glib about a c-section.
WHOA! I wasn't being glib or dismissive. However, I have been cut in the perineum area before for a cancer surgery and it was FUCKING AWFUL! It was close to 3 months before I could sit for extended peroiods of time without one of those damn donut pillows. :angryfire2: I don't even want to discuss the staph aureus infection I acquired down there.:mad:

I'm sure most women do. However, I am not most women and given my past medical history I am not willing to bet money on it.

I am aware of this. I am actually more than a little pissed off that an abdominal myomectomy like mine only requires a one night stay. I shouldn't complain it could be outpatient. But thats a rant for another day.

Okay, that I did not know :yikes: and I know at least 6 women who have had C-Sections! What are y'all like sworn to silence on that info or what?

Yes, this I knew but since my uterus is currently the size of a 12 week pregnancy do to this massive fibroid I kinda gave up the idea of being on the cover of Abs of Steel. The truth is even when I was 60 pounds lighter I still had a bit of a pouchy belly. :frown1: I'm not discounting your experience. I am just saying I have no memory of a flat tummy in the last 25 years.

I'm sorry you had such a tough time of it. :frown1:

This is why I question the 6 month time table. I think if I were to give my body 12 to 18 months to heal a natural delivery might be feasible.

Apparently I already have adhesions from the laparascopic myomectomy I had 10 years ago; which is causing some intestinal problems. :irked: Since my upcoming abdominal myomectomy surgery is what gynecologists call a bikini cut the fear is that during a natural labor between pushing and contractions I will rupture the abdominal incision and cause massive internal damage. It's a sort of damned if you do and damned if you don't endeavor at this point.

I'm sorry if I didn't convey the seriousness of the procedures. Part of me doesn't want to think about it because I know it is major surgery and women still die in childbirth or become paralyzed even in civilized first world nations.

I am sorry you are continuing going through all of these health issues, you are in my prayers and thoughts daily. I am glad that the new was an option you can retain your fertility and ability to carry your own baby. I know how much that means to you. I hope you get that chance in the near future. Hang in there and if you ever need anything you know how to contact me. I'm always there for you my dizzy buddy!
