We are advised that the MP for mid-Bedfordshire, Nadine Dorries, has been suspended from the Conservative Party Whip for taking part in the reality show "I'm a Celebrity get me out of here!" It hardly needs to be said that for a serving Member of Parliament to participate in a reality television show is as distasteful and inappropriate as it would be for any other holder of public office. Such shows should be left to pop stars and media celebrities who are household names one day and forgotten the next. However Nadine should have been left to find that out for herself as, we are sure, she will. We cannot avoid concluding that the suspension is heavy handed and unnecessary. It merely serves to make the Conservative Party look ridiculous and those responsible would do well to re-visit their decision.
