So, onto M, the owner of said flower emporium..see previous for background, if can be bothered.....
M was around late 40's. He was very dapper and well groomed, and dressed sort of preppy style. He was fastidious when it can to work too. Everything had to be just right. You could say he could be a fuss pot at times, but I admired his professionalism, and although at ties he seemed to nag a bit, I knew it was because he really cared to do beautiful work.
M must have been a seriously good salesman as he had some big shot clients around D.C. It was amazing to me because we installed some huge flower displays for major social, business and political events at some of the swankiest addresses in Georgetown, the City and the plusher 'burbs, from a very modest small shop and flower work room at the back. I never quite knew how we managed it. Van loads of floral displays emanating from this little place basically with 3 to 4 flower arrangers at busiest, and me occasionally helping with simpler display items like table vases or that oasis stuff in wicker or whatever.
I kind of wondered when he hired me if it was partly to do with the fact that back then I was vaguely adonis like - (note small 'a', as not sure the face cuts it!
. Tanned, toned and Brit accent..I knew before I went to get the job that all the staff were gay, and I did wonder for a while if he might have any intentions towards me.
However, he never once even vaguely made any sort of pass. Even if he wanted to he was a gentleman anyway, and actually very professional, so think it unlikely he would have. Plus he was in a long term relationship. Please note for avoidance of doubt...I did not assume he fancied me, and I was not fearful even if he had come on to me...though whether women or men, I have often felt awkward about letting them down if they pursue me (not that often I hasten to add!)
Mainly he used to make me laugh when he got his knickers in a twist over B being late all the time (see Part 2), and I did tease him about it a bit, which to his credit he took in good spirit.
One day it was quiet in the shop, and just M and me. We got talking. He asked me about my gf...she had popped by the shop a few times by then. I asked him about his relationship. He said that they were very loving, but then sort of slightly sotto voce told me that the sex was not as good as used to be..well of course all relationships, gay straight or other can go stale, but he explained that part of the problem was loose botty...I had heard of this in porn stars who do a lot of anal...so that it was not as satisfying anymore. I could tell he was somewhat nostalgic at that point for younger more vigorous days.
M was always really good to me, and I enjoyed working with him. I got to see a lot Of D.C. I would not have done otherwise, and we had some good giggles as well. M was also the one who told me about HIV/AIDS, and who asked me to deliver the flowers to their dying friend - Part 1- (he was almost in tears when he asked me, which is probably why I didn't say no or question it at the time).
I suspect M is either a very old man now or dead by now...either way I recall him well from long-ish ago, and wish him well, with us or not.
I did just think wouldn't it be funny if anyone recognised the place I am talking about or any of the people. Now that would be fun!! Do PM if so!!
Au revoir for now! I might return with some daft delivery tales...
