Pet Rescue Day 4

Sorry to go on about this topic again.

But today i rang animal control to have no answer and no call back.

What would animal control do anyway? Show up and tell the people to care for their dog properly? yes. Would the people do that? no.

so i called the vet of my black lab Boris and his rescue program is full. He told me of two other rescue programs, one of which was closed today and one of which i contacted to no success.

So - on schedule at nine p.m. i went over to get 'Kilo' while Boris was out and brought him in to feed and water him and clearly the dog has been so abused that he doesn't even know how to eat freely. i had to hand feed him and direct him to water. this went on for ten minutes. if i did not hand feed him, he would not eat, or drink.
this poor dog is far worse off than i realized.
so that means that as soon as i can get him into a good rescue program, i will.
i will not ask animal control to direct the people to care for him. the owneres will do no such thing.
nor will i ask the owners if i may have their dog. they will say 'no' and when the dog goes missing...
so i will make sure that the dog gets into a good rescue program. period. the owners of this dog are utterly lacking and deserve no consideration whatsoever.
the dog does though. and he will be well cared for before i take off for interviews in dallas.
sorry this is all i have to blog about - but this poor dog is fantastic and needs to be cared for and provided for and it seems i am the only one that will do that for it.
job stuff and stupid, hot girl dating stuff will follow for sure.

thanks mandee! i absolutely will. if i cannot, then i will be taking two big dogs to dallas with me. lol. if Kilo's new home is not here, then perhaps it will be there. no matter what happens, i am committed to making sure he is well taken care of.

It is not surprising that Animal Control was not helpful. They rarely are but, some government agencies (or individuals within the agency) are better than others and it is always the first place to start with the phone calls. Private humane societies and SPCAs are more likely to help. Are there any in your area?
Luckily, thanks to your efforts, Kilo will have a much better home soon. But, the reason why these people need to be made officially aware that the way they treated Kilo was UNLAWFUL is that they are very likely to get another dog. Stopping the cycle of abuse and neglect is the goal of getting Animal Control involved. I know that you are moving soon (so you may not have to witness it) but before you know it, they will get a cute puppy and when it is not longer cute to them or becomes a nuisance, it will be doomed to live a life like Kilo's former life. I doubt that he was their first or last dog. If they are made to pay a fine, or at the very least get pestered by Animal Control, they may realize that their unacceptable and unlawful treatment of their "pets" will not be tolerated.
Don't get discouraged. Placing a large dog (especially during these tough economic times) is difficult. Spread the word through your network of friends. Do you have any photos of him? Telling his story with photos may help. If your vet cannot help place Kilo perhaps they can post his photos and story at their clinic and website?

Hopefully, Kilo's new family will emerge soon! Keep up the good work!

God bless you for doing all you are doing for this poor dog. I think you are right not to involve the authorities -- they really have no enforcement power, and a visit from them would probably just convince your neighbors to kill the dog or dump it on the other side of town.

I meant to add ... the way to play hardball with these people, based on what you said in your earlier posts, is to call Child Protective Services.

You described the neighbors as "trash," so I assume the place is a shithole ... describe the conditions of their property, including the neglected dog. Then describe the horrible crying sounds the dog made, but say one of the kids was making the sounds.

Unlike animal control, these people have real power. And they are probably very aware that those who abuse animals tend to be violent toward other people as well.

Animal Control DOES have the authority to investigate cases of animal abuse or neglect. If they don't than some other agency does. This is the year 2009. These cases are prosecuted all of the time but you will find even cases of child abuse/neglect are RARELY repsonded to after the first phone call. Sad but true. It usually takes several calls even with kids. Apathy? Laziness? Civil Servant Malaise? Overburdened System? Yes, all of the above. Bottom line is there is no one going to be eager to do their job unless you make them.

YOU are a VERY CARING and NOBLE DUDE!
The world needs many more peeps like YOU! I am sure that 'KILO' will sing your praises forever! On behalf of dog lovers on this site and everywhere else I thank you for showing such great kindness to a poor defenseless animal! All of us are proud to know you! May God bless you for your great kindness!!
