Recovery

When i was able to be out of the hospital bed and get out of the buliding and walk around outside it was fantastic.
Fresh air, exercise.

As i walked out the front door there was an older man in his seventies sitting on a bench. He had white hair and a nice walking stick that i noticed and it was such a nice walking stick that i felt compelled to tell him so.

He was lost in thought and seemed happy for the disruption of my inquiry. I told him to hand over his walking stick and i realized it was made of ash wood. Turns out he makes the walking sticks.

We struck up a conversation. He was a state policeman that had been shot in the face and had his face rebuilt and as it turns out we had the same surgeon. He demanded that i remove my big, dark glasses so he could see my face. I obliged and he methofically looked at my face and declared the work to be well done.
My friend had offered to pick me up to take me out for dinner and he arrived just as Darwin (that was the old man's name) and i were having a nice conversation. Darwin and i changed numbers and my friend and i had a fun time out with a nice meal and some good coffee.

Later that night not being able to sleep i again ventured outside the hospital and across the street to have a cigarette. I found a bus stop bench and was having a smoke when this older mexican woman sat down next to me on the bench. I saw her hospital credentials around her neck and said hello.
We began talking in spanish and she unabashedly stared at my deformed post surgical face which i found amusing.
This woman did not hide her curiosity at what had happened to me and asked me about it.
i told her.
i asked her what she did at the hospital and she told me that for 24 years she cleaned the rooms.
i told her that when i got to my room it was clean and beautiful and that i was happy to stay in such a nicely cleaned room and that i was happy to meet her.
This whole interchange was in spanish and it was great fun to have such a conversation. The woman was so sincere in her curiosity of my injury and in talking about her work at the hospital. It was very refreshing.

Talking with old Darwin and the old mexican cleaning lady was wonderful. I would never have met them if i were not there and it was nice to have spontaneous, sincere conversation with strangers. I enjoyed meeting them.

My recovery is off to a good start.

The really cool thing about chatting with the mexican cleaning woman is that she was so proud of her hard work and smiled so brightly to be encouraged for the good work that she does.
