Saying Good Bye

So - since four o'clock on Saturday afternoon i have been making the rounds to say goodbye to the people that i value most in my 14 year exile in the midwest.

The most excellent people that i have met in exile were people whose house on lake michigan that i painted under my contracting business.

Spectacular people. now, they are 83 and 84. world traveled, physically active, ride their bikes 60 miles a day, swim in lake michigan in the summer, dance on their deck at midnight to jazz that was new when they were in high school. they are so remarkable. so common sense, compassionate, so aware, so politically incorrect.

Other than my best friend since the age of two years old, these people brought tears to my eyes as i hugged them and kissed them on both cheeks. I left quickly because we would have all burst into tears. WASPS don't do that. lol.

We had a bottle of great french wine, cheese and italian meat in the west room with the sun pouring in, talking like chatterboxes. everyone had so much to say and none of us wanted the talking to end.

I am so thankful for painting those people's house. They were kind to me. They were kind to me. I am surprised when people are truly kind to me and when they are, i am truly appreciative.

When i do my general contractor gig, when i am good at it, that's all that counts. and beyond that, i am good to people and love doing it and somehow they know that and believe me and i love that.
and when people find out their contractor is actually......they are surprised and delighted and are still my friends.

My best friend from age two has just left.
he has supported me, encouraged me, pissed me off. lol. just like a best friend does and at the end of it all is still my best friend come hell or high water. no matter waht has happend, we have come through for each other. such loyalty is a rare gift and i have known it and am thankful for it. we will be friends until one of us dies. i am fortunate and will miss my best friend. but happy to have such a best friend. i am thankful and fortunate.

so, the clock is winding down on the move.
and it's nice to have clarity of who in 14 years comes through in the end.
