something entirely different

I did something entirely different at work today. I fired someone. Basically fired. Technically, it was a layoff, but everyone knows it was a firing.

I've never done anything even remotely like this before. It was quite stressful. We even had a security guard on standby in case the woman flipped out. I wasn't scared, but everyone involved insisted on it.

Marjorie took me out for Starbucks afterward. Everyone was stressed for the rest of the day.

It's good that you felt bad about it. I 've fired dozens of people and it never gets easier. People basically fire themselves assuming that you've given them a few warnings (3 is usual unless it was a legal action such as assault or stalking or such). I always go the route of verbal and then written warnings and give people ample opportunity and resources to fix the issue. If they don't than it's goodbye. Never pleasant but has to be done. Occasionally people come back and thank me cause it was the kick in the butt they needed to make a change.

Three warnings being too few or more than usual?

One thing for sure is I'm glad she's gone. I think everyone is.
