Stone or cast iron... Just a label? BPN: 001/OCT2010

I have never cared much for labels (except the expensive kind ), yet it seems societal provisos indicate just that. You are straight, you are black, you are short, you are gay, etc, and when I joined LPSG just over a month ago, I noticed that when it came to orientation, one was able to choose a ratio of straight to gay, which sure had me thinking.

The dictionary defines orientation as:to place in any definite position with reference to the points.
Now, this definition made sense, and I’ll tell you why...
Society places the options in front of you. You are either black or white, you are either gay or straight... yet the definition of orientation just asks you: Where are you within the two points?
Straight-------1----------------------2-----------------3Gay
Are you at point 1? 2? 3?
What I’m trying to get at, is that although we’re led to believe so, it is not an either/or question.
Big-ups to LPSG then!

Anyways, my friends and I were discussing some people who have ‘come out of the closet’ in recent years- some surprising, some unexpectedly, and well, some just needed the proverbial boot from the oh-so-comfortable closet... So, I came up with the Presuppose-preclude theory.
This theory is based on human sexuality as a variable, in that no individual is precluded from either homosexuality or heterosexuality no matter how their persona leads you to believe. This presupposition also stands to reason that the human sexuality is malleable- one just needs the right stimulus...

I stumbled upon this interesting quote recently by Christopher Isherwood that I’d like to end with: “It seems to me that the real clue to your sex-orientation lies in your romantic feelings rather than in your sexual feelings. If you are really gay, you are able to fall in love with a man, not just enjoy having sex with him.”
