The mind is a terrible thing - Or is it?

Well, been up since 2:30 just can't sleep. My mind is going in multiple directions. Not bad thoughts just things I'm needing to work out. So I started thinking does your brain somehow tell you when its time sleep, wake up or when you need to resolve an issue? I know this makes no sense to someone reading it. I'm just rambling like my mind is right now. Sometimes it seems the brain can take over and not let you do what you would like to do.
What I need to do is lay down but to late for that, the day is upon me. Wish everyone the best.

Chemicals in your brain trigger sleep. The biggest one is serotonin. It's an inhibitory & excitory neurotransmitter. Gosh what a geek I am. haha

But really, if your mind is racing and you awake in the middle of the night there may be an imbalance. Or just unresolved issues. Even an over the counter sleep aid can help every now and then.
 
professional insomniac here. i finally found a mental exercise that works.

5 things - see, feel, hear.
get into bed, get comfy.

list 5 things you can see - i see the lamp. i see the dresser. i see light through the window.

list 5 things you feel - i feel the sheet on my legs. i feel the breeze from the fan. (is not easy to five things)

last you list 5 things you hear - i usually start to drift off before i list 5 things.
