Today Vicky Pryce, former wife of disgraced former cabinet minister Chris Huhne, was today convicted at Southwark Crown Court of perverting the course of justice by accepting his points for a speeding offence committed in 2003. But for Chris Huhne's affair in 2010 and the breakup of his marriage, in all probability the world would have known none of this. As it is Ms Pryce, no doubt motivated by spite, set out to punish her husband by destroying him both personally and professionally. This she assuredly managed to do. Whether Ms Pryce ever really imagined that she could pull it off without being convicted herself, we shall never know. What we do know is this; her husband, realising he stood no realistic prospect of acquital, pleaded guilty - albeit late in the day. Ms Pryce, however, elected to stand trial. Her first trial collapsed in what might charitably be called a fiasco and a retrial was ordered. Her second trial has now come to an end and a different jury has given its verdict. Ms Pryce relied on the rather dubious defence of Marital Coercion, a defence which dates from a time when the character of marital relationships was rather different from that regarded as normative nowadays, and for which certain conditions have to be met for it to stand a realistic chance of success. Ms Pryce has been warned, as was her husband, to expect a custodial sentence. If this sorry case proves anything it is that two wrongs don't make a right. Ms Pryce has brought down her ex husband but she has also ruined her own life into the bargain. It would seem to us that she has shown herself willing to pay a high price for spite.
