Things I don't like, part I

Since this is a long text, I want to apologize in advance for any mistakes I made towards the English language. It's not my mother tongue. I would appreciate it if you pointed out any of my mistakes so I can learn from them.

Things I don't like
_________________________________
People referring to their partner as "the boyfriend", "the girlfriend", "the wife", "the husband", "my partner", "the old ball and chain" etc.
It gives me the same feeling as "my boss", "my employee" or "my colleague".
What's wrong with replacing those with "MY boyfriend", "MY wife", "MY husband", ...

For instance, when you refer to your boyfriend as "the boyfriend", I have to restrain myself from imagining either a pimp or a guy with a harem.

If you say "the wife", I'm imagining either a bossy type with your balls in her purse, or a green card marriage. Or a failing marriage in any case. "The old ball and chain" is self explanatory I think. Of course there are certain humorous ways to bring your partner up in such kind offer manner. Which is totally fine of course.

"My partner": To me this sounds like an awkward moment in a sitcom where the father doesn't know his son is gay. The son's boyfriend doesn't know that the father doesn't know. So, to leave the father some room for thinking he is introducing his business partner, he says "my partner". Because, you know... He didn't lie, he just wasn't very clear. Of course his boyfriend and his father don't find out about all of this until later in the episode.... Classic! This was bad writing in the nineties. Let's not use it in real life 20 years later.
Without me over thinking things and creating a boyfriend with golden teeth and a golden cup filled with gemstones in my mind; I truly believe that - if they are not used in a comical fashion - those terms show either a lack of respect or a lack of affection for your partner.
In conclusion: To me it feels like people using the afore mentioned terms, have no business being together with the person that they are describing.

Comments

Because when you're over 40 you feel silly saying "my boyfriend". I feel like a 13 year old girl. I don't refer to him often as "the boyfriend" but if I did, that would be why.
