What are Autism Spectrum Disorder's

What is Autism?
Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Both children and adults with autism typically show difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities.

Autism is one of five disorders that falls under the umbrella of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD), a category of neurological disorders characterized by “severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development.”
Prevalence

Autism is the most common of the Pervasive Developmental Disorders, affecting an estimated 1 in 150 births (Centers for Disease Control Prevention, 2007). Roughly translated, this means as many as 1.5 million Americans today are believed to have some form of autism. And this number is on the rise.

Based on statistics from the U.S. Department of Education and other governmental agencies, autism is growing at a startling rate of 10-17 percent per year. At this rate, the ASA estimates that the prevalence of autism could reach 4 million Americans in the next decade.

Autism knows no racial, ethnic, or social boundaries; family income levels; lifestyle choices; or educational levels, and can affect any family and any child.

And although the overall incidence of autism is consistent around the globe, it is four times more prevalent in boys than in girls.

Comments

Furthermore, most men you will meet in life are actually on the Autism spectrum somewhere, all be it mildly.

Maybe that's true where you are RugbyPup. Here in the states most men and women are nowhere near the Autism Spectrum.

If what you say is true in your country, it's no wonder you are having so much trouble meeting someone!

You would be surprised on this one NJQT466, trust me, I've worked in the field. I am talking so mild it bearly registers mind you and about males only.

My 9 y.o. son has Asperger's Syndrome. Life hasn't been easy for him. The ironic thing about his autism is that he did , in fact, have difficulty with speech. they classified it as "Hard time with pronounciation and Articulation of speech".

you hit it RIGHT on the money with him NOT understanding Irony, Humor, and sarcasm. He often doesn't understand WHY people do one thing and say Another thing. That would be the Sarcasm. He is VERY intelligent. He scores Above his grade level in Math,Science, and Ironically Art. yes.....he has even won AWARDS for his art work. He LOVES to paint with daddy. And he LOVES to work on the truck too! He fixed the wheel cylinders on a 95 chevy truck just 2 months ago. Now we're work'n on some fuel lines, and soon a tune-up. Yes,.....I get dirty with the tools too! LOL (I'm a HUGE tom-boy undernearth my exterior, didn't ya know? LOL ).

my point is....your blog is very educational. I find many pointers to be true in our daily lives. However,...I do feel different about the Art. Our son ADORES painting. And I hope it continues in his life.

thanks again NJGT466, I'm look'n forward to reading many more informative, intriguing blogs in the near future.

intrigued,
