Working Out

I'm 6'3" and I've been hovering around 130 lbs. (give or take stomach contents) for about four years now.

I don't build muscle quickly or easily, but I've always considered myself to be fairly athletic and to be in pretty decent shape/health.

  • My standing broad jump exceeds nine feet.
  • I can leg press 500 lbs.
  • I can dunk a basketball.
  • I can toss a disc (see: Frisbee) about 100 yards with no tailwind.
  • I can run a mile in less than nine minutes with relative ease.
  • I can do sit-ups/curls until my back hurts from being on the ground so long.
  • I'm skilled in several forms of martial arts.
  • And I have the arms of a 12 year old girl (that isn't a gymnast).
I get a lot of mixed receptions about my weight (or lack thereof), but I've always been pretty happy with my body. I mean, I've had a six-pack since I was in third grade, not a lot of people can say that. When it comes to actually having to lift or move something people are often surprised by the strength I actually have in my scrawny girl arms and I sort of like that, but... I'd rather people not assume I'm weak.

As such, I've been doing a lot to actually build muscle mass as of late. I'm not expecting overnight miracles and I know I don't have the body type/physiology to become amazingly stacked, but I'm feeling pretty good about things so far and I'm doing a good job sticking with it.

I've increased the intensity dramatically in the last few weeks and I am starting to see some results. The thing that amuses me most about the situation is that nearly everyone I hear about exercises to lose weight, and I'm exercising to gain it. I guess I can't really complain, but in the amount of time it's taken me to gain 5 lbs. a good friend of mine has lost nearly 20. I just feel like things are almost harder from this side of the hill.

Oh well, just have to keep doing it and see how things go. Put a few pics up in my gallery and will probably continue to do so as I actually (hopefully) build.

ya i just started going back to the gym a month ago and i feel great. if you want to gain some weight make sure you drink a protein shake within 30 minutes of the end of your workout and make sure you eat well throughout the day and no fast food. i hope things work out for ya

have you had a personal trainer? they'll give you a basic diet/work out plan which suits you best. it might be worth it, even for 1 hour.

building muscle takes a lot of time and effort (as I'm sure you're aware). 5lbs over a couple of weeks is good. I starting working out about 2 months ago, started to put on a little bit of muscle for the first time, and actually lost 7lbs. i started on the protein shakes (Joe Weider Muscle Builder) after a month but don't know if it does much.

the only guys in my gym who have serious muscles are there EVERY time i go, whether it's morning, day or night, and i go at least 3-4 time a week. i don't fancy that kind of dedication(after a 9-5, it's tiring at the gym), or that kind of muscle. i've had a few friends comment on my arms and chest, and those comments make the whole thing worth while (i love the girls giving it a squeeze).

best of luck, and keep us posted.
