Go back to Claire's first post in this thread. Many of the major points are most likely directed right at Ms. Lords.

I am a fan and casual friend of Christy Canyon. We never discussed finances, but she owns her own home in LA, drives nice (but not super-expensive) cars, takes nice vacations, etc. She was one of the female stars to have her own production company, get royalties for her work (unheard of these days) and still own the rights to her name to be able to make money off it. She now cohosts a program on Playboy radio on Sirius.

There are always a few exceptions to the 'rules.'

Yeah, she is one, among many. But the case of Traci Lords holds some interesting details.

She launched most of her movies being underage. In fact, she started nude modelling aged 15, and went into adult movie biz aged 16, and later was arrested by the FBI for that, all the movies she shot until 1986 were banned as child pornography. If I remember right, the trial fell apart after the defense proved how easy it was to get a passport with falsified age statement issued.

Being legal of age, she shot just one adult movie. Which, if I remember correctly, was a consequence of her being persona non grata after the previous affair.

She received proper acting training. In 1987 (88?) she enrolled at Lee Strasberg acting school at New York, had voice lessons, and developed her acting performance. Since then, she has starred in numerous TV series and TV movies.

Personally, I just remember having seen her in a TV catastrophe movie titled "Epicenter", which was crap, and which is why I won't rate her acting performance now. For above details, I looted her IMDb.com biography, I admit.

Still, those were the 80s, and the adult movie industry has changed a lot during the past 20 years. Remember they shot real flicks back then, with something like a crappy story line, nothing that can be compared to todays pseudo-reality internet porn.

However, I wasn't only thinking about a transition from porn to mainstream movies. I was also thinking about a transition from being a porn actress to getting a "real" job. When you turn out to have starred in an adult flick, it can be quite a career killer.

Another funny side note on this subject is a recent news I saw: Ex-porn actress Savannah Samson is now the owner of a winery. The red she produces received 90-91% in the Parker wine guide, I guess that's because the grapes were blent by an Italian star enologist. How deep her own involvement is, wasn't stated by the article.

She owned all the rights to the one movie she made after she turned 18. Since it was the only one that could be legally sold in the USA, she made lots of money on it! (Which is also why it is no longer avilable. Once she went 'mainstream', she didn't want it to still be out there so she pulled it off the shelves.)

Still, small roles for the most part. She was probably given the roles more for the notoriety of her name than for her acting ability. ;)
After all, if she really was serious about her acting, why didn't she go back to using her real name, Nora Kuzma? Because, despite her claims as to dispising her past, she has been trying to capitalize on it ever since! LOL!

In my example in the post above, Christy worked for her father's company during one of her retirements, and has done adult-oriented TV and radio in the last 2 years or so.

She is retired from porn already? It just seems like last year or so that she went from a Scores NY stripper, who appeared on Howard Stern's show, to a porn star, who appeared on Howard Stern's show. Her husband is a wine merchant, so she may have used his connections to those in the industry.
If she is successfull at it, good for her!

For that reason, and because she pulled the whole stunt of shooting and producing on her own, so there were no production companies or casting agents or promoters who could reserve the largest piece of the cake for themselves. However, I guess that flick is still out there on the net (what isn't?), and I believe some of her older work too. There you see what you can do if you're underage, only if your rack is big enough!

The mere mentioning of a past as a pornstar hold some short-lived attractiveness to showbiz people, I think. Nobody would bother to deal with you in earnest, because 80% of goodie-two-shoes America would be shocked and demand you to be banned from the screens straight to hell; we know the notoriety of the mainstream, non-independent movie industry for avoiding anything that could frighten off the average viewer.

IMDb.com lists a lot of roles for TV series and some for movies, but let's not be so hard. Supporting roles SUPPORT a movie, or a series, after all.

Well, that's good for her. Still, I can't imagine such a past rousing much positive interest with most employers, maybe some curiosity, but that's it. Again, everyone is too much afraid to suffer an image knack or get someone unreliable into their company. Sad, but true.

I think the article stated she has retired to turn all of her attention on this business. The wine she launched is named "Sogno Uno" ("The Only One"?), and is close to $100 a bottle. It appears she has done several review and promotion jobs for the wine industry before, which has given her a reputation there. To save costs for PR, she is the star of the bottle, and can be seen in a see-through gown on the label. I guess I'll just have to try it, usually I give a crap for raves about new wines, but for the fun of it, maybe ;-)

The popularity of porn will always be a strange thing to me and the popularity of only a select few of the people in the films. It still amazes how Ron what's his name is still more popular for people wanting to see him than some of the men who are considered better endowed and better looking. All a mysterry.

Meanwhile, isn't the reason why women are the "stars" of straight porn because it's primarily targeted at straight men? I remember seeing a documentary on the porn industry on HBO (I think) where one older porn producer said his company specifically sought out less attractive men (paging Ron Jeremy) because it allowed the typical porn viewer to better imagine himself f*cking the woman on screen. If the men were too hot, it took away from the male viewer's fantasy that he, too, could nail Jenna Jameson.

Well, that was the thinking back then. Then they discovered that even men like to see both participants look good. Its fantasy. And they rather see themselves as having a great body and a good size dick. Enter the Peter Norths and the Julian Rios. The proof is that these films out sold or sold better then the "average looking guy" films.

I saw that in a more recent documentary.
