Traci Lords did an amicable job of converting from porn to mainstream hollywood there, Claire. Of course, that's just one out of thousands.
Yeah, she is one, among many. But the case of Traci Lords holds some interesting details.
She launched most of her movies being underage. In fact, she started nude modelling aged 15, and went into adult movie biz aged 16, and later was arrested by the FBI for that, all the movies she shot until 1986 were banned as child pornography. If I remember right, the trial fell apart after the defense proved how easy it was to get a passport with falsified age statement issued.
Being legal of age, she shot just one adult movie. Which, if I remember correctly, was a consequence of her being persona non grata after the previous affair.
She received proper acting training. In 1987 (88?) she enrolled at Lee Strasberg acting school at New York, had voice lessons, and developed her acting performance. Since then, she has starred in numerous TV series and TV movies.
Personally, I just remember having seen her in a TV catastrophe movie titled "Epicenter", which was crap, and which is why I won't rate her acting performance now. For above details, I looted her IMDb.com biography, I admit.
Still, those were the 80s, and the adult movie industry has changed a lot during the past 20 years. Remember they shot real flicks back then, with something like a crappy story line, nothing that can be compared to todays pseudo-reality internet porn.
However, I wasn't only thinking about a transition from porn to mainstream movies. I was also thinking about a transition from being a porn actress to getting a "real" job. When you turn out to have starred in an adult flick, it can be quite a career killer.
Another funny side note on this subject is a recent news I saw: Ex-porn actress Savannah Samson is now the owner of a winery. The red she produces received 90-91% in the Parker wine guide, I guess that's because the grapes were blent by an Italian star enologist. How deep her own involvement is, wasn't stated by the article.
