In the good old days, mitchy, tinsel did not come in garlands, but in bales of individual strands much like aluminum foil hair. It also used to contain lead to keep it from flying around too much and children could be poisoned by eating it. It was a great way of keeping children busy though, to set them to the task of draping single strands of tinsel from every twig.

Nowadays I think they have switched to mylar films and the stuff has become too susceptible to static to be any use except in garland form.

We refered to the single strands as icicles and gowing up we had to hang them one by one on every branch tip and make sure they were hanging straight.

Thank you.

I hadn't intended it to match the wall lol, the purple is my fave colour tinsel. i could have used a range of others, i've got red, gold, silver, blue, green, burgundy, turquoise, black and white.

We should probably thank our lucky stars that you've got taste and only put the one colour on the tree instead of all of them

I daren't go to the local garden centre where it becomes a magical winterland of xmas baubles and tinsel with several colours i've not yet got.

We had a Christmas shop near us. It was absolutely magical!!! It had trees, decorations, Christmas villages, you name it, they probably had it. I could never afford to buy all the stuff I wanted, but I went every year just to look. Not this year though - it burned down a few weeks ago :frown1:

Vertical tinsel??? I don't think i have EVER seen that!!! A slightly diagonal-horizontal is the best look definately.

:biggrin1: If I can find a picture of our weird vertical tinsel before Xmas, I'll post it.

Mitchy, I love your tree!
Do you grow bananas on it?;)

Oh Lukie, only chocolate can be found to eat on my tree, except i have not put them on yet.

You can still get them in the UK (minus the lead). I can't remember what we call them but i think its something like 'lament' or 'lintle' or somethin weird.

Haha, yea, that would be cool to see.

I was asked to post a pic of my tree. (by someone who doesn't think it sounds gay!!!)

Here it is.

So Beautiful. I love it.

[I'd type exclamation marks, but I can't because that row of keys is broken on this keyboard. ]

I didn't understand what you meant by "tinsel" because where my grandparents live and taught me the language of Christmas, this is tinsel, which they also called icicles. I think we use the word "garland" here for what you call tinsel, which can be made out of almost anything strung together and draped on the tree, like a tinsel garland, a bead garland, a berry garland, a paper chain garland, etc. Do I have it right? Surely some other LPSGers use the same jargon for those Christmas decorations as my family does?

One year everyone else went out, leaving my ex and I to put the tree up. We couldn't be bothered doing the tree, so we decided to decorate a Xmas Fire instead:

That's funny :lmao: I like it.

At least you decorated something. I've spent years not decorating anything for Christmas. I don't think TheBF ever has either. He's had a small box of old fashioned ornaments and an artificial tree in his attic that has obviously been untouched for at least a decade.

I'm decorating next week. I put on some porn, a santa hat and a leather harness and become a naughty elf.

That's hilarious. :biggrin1:

We're decorating next week, too, hopefully, but our party doesn't sound half as naughty as yours does. We're trying to start some new family traditions, now that we have a new family.

How about a Christmas Cactus.

Is that what that is? My dad made a point of showing me one of those that he has, and I didn't why he was doing it. It went over my head that it's a Christmas Cactus.

Ok, well what you know as tinsel, we call lamentle or somethin like that, its not very popular so i cant remember exactly what its called. And you call garland what we call tinsel. Garlands to us are xmas wreaths for hangin on the front door.

We were pretty proud of ourselves :biggrin1:. Much better than the year we put the tree up but couldn't be bothered putting anything on it (we meant to do it eventually, but put it off so much we ran out of time ).

My ex and I never bothered either because we always spent Xmas elsewhere.

For when TheBaby becomes TheChild, he gets to put the star/angel on top and it has to be done at the end - results in a really magical moment. If you have more kids, the youngest gets to put the star on - then everyone gets at least a few years when they get to do it.

Other good Xmas traditions for kids (or their parents):

Writing a letter to Santa and drawing him a map so he knows where to find you.
Bedrooms must be clean for Xmas or Santa won't come (it's manipulative but it worked so well on us that we clean our bedrooms for Xmas even as adults!)
Making 'Santa footprints' out of flour or fake snow from the tree to your chimney, window or front door (as a surprise so they wake up to it on Xmas day). 'Reindeer poo' on the front (or back) lawn will also impress kids.
Take it in turn to open presents, instead of doing it all at once, so every present is appreciated.

We use the same names as you mitch. Dunno about the lamentle though - I've never heard of it or seen it.

Lets do a deeper dive.

Angel Hair Tinsel was very common but not so much anymore. (I think it was the hassle of taking it off the tree)

I haven't used it on my artificial one yet, but probably will next year as I love the look of a nostalgic 70's 80's tree!

Holy fuck!!! Your tree is so huge! And so thick! I'm jealous now. I want it. How much did that thing cost you?

Edit: I just realise quite how penis-ey that sounded

Believe it or not, it only cost around $200.
Its 7.5 feet tall, and about 72 inches wide at the base.
I will try to find my paperwork on it to get the tip count. I believe it was around 2500 tips.

I should have gotten the same tree, but the narrower version for $160 but... the tree size queen I am.....

Okay, I just did a search. For $193 AUD ($190 USD) you can get a tree that's 7.3 feet x 50 inches at the base. With 1074 tips. I am really, really, really jealous. And I suspect I have a little tree size queen in me too :biggrin1:.

You'd better decorate that thing beautifully :smile::biggrin1::biggrin1:

Will do that tonight and take photos.
Have a friend coming over where I have to fix his car for him, and hope to have enough energy when that's done.

Mine is:
National Tree Company
2 Commerce Dr.
Cranford, NJ 07016
Item No: CMLB-500-75
National Tree Co. Index

They may have retailers in your area, or may be able to give you a part number to shop online for it.
The only complaint is my first one had a branch snap off, but was quickly covered by warranty. Returned it to the local retailer, and they replaced the tree on the spot. Haven't had another issue with this new tree.

Edit: Duh...I'm sorry - they don't have a retailer for AU...but mabee an online retailer could ship.

This almost looks like it...but this one is lighted http://www.unbeatablesale.com/ntlt057.html
