I live in the Vancouver area in Surrey, but plan on moving to Vancouver pretty soon I lived there for 8 months in 04/05 I really love the city it is one of the most beautiful cities I've lived in .
You have the mountains on one side & the ocean on the other. It is pretty mild here in the winter with little to no snow. I definitely recommend visiting here

To bad they didn't show any of the great wonders of Vanc. Like the largest homeless population in canada... Good thing they broomed them into other areas of the city.

Just like any other big city anywhere else in the world. I can't ever remember seeing a drunken bum singing "I love New York!" in a NY tourism ad, or some cocaine snorting junkie extolling the virtues of tourism in Florida or California.

Watching the opening ceremonies tonight...I really think I want to visit Vancouver now. The city and the region look amazing. I've been to the eastern part of Canada...maybe I need to go see the west too.

It is an absolutely beautiful city. I lived in B.C. (just outside of Vancouver) for 3 years. The only downside of living there is that it's insanely expensive to live in Vancouver or the surrounding areas (GVA). When I lived there, the job opportunities weren't very plentiful in my field, so I had to move back east. It was a shame though. Had it not been so expensive to live there and had the job opportunities been better for me, I would probably still be living there today. I do highly recommend that you visit though.

I remember a taxi driver was taking us to Chinatown and he drove by an area near B.C. Place stadium and said that this area is the worst in Canada. I remember thinking that it looked much better than the worst places in the U.S., like the Tenderloin in San Francsisco.

That would have probably been East Vancouver. There is a lot of poverty, drug abuse, homelessness, etc there (just like any other big city anywhere else in the world). You are correct though that as bad as it is (by Canadian standards) it doesn't come anywhere near as bad as the time I took a wrong turn and ended up in the worst part of Detroit about 18 years ago! Holy crap - I was too afraid to even get out of my car! On the other hand, I had walked through East Van several times when I lived out in B.C. and I never feared for my safety once. The only problem I encountered was panhandlers (many were drug addicts looking to score money for their next fix), but they just asked for money and if you said "no" they left you alone. It's utterly amazing though that East Van is so down and out, yet just one block over is Gas Town in West Van which is so beautiful, clean and expensive. North Van is about the most expensive real estate in all of Canada. The homes there start in the millions, not hundreds of thousands.

I, for one, thought the opening ceremony was amazing. It really highlighted the geographical diversity of Canada quite well with the representation of the various indigenous peoples and the cool effects such as the symbolic totems rising out of the ground and simulated sea ripples with the orcas. And as always, I am a huge fan of the Parade of Nations.

Some events that I hope to catch are speed skating (go Ohno!), alpine skiing, cross country skiing, luge, bobsledding, ice hockey, and strangely enough curling.

Congrats too, Canada. I was just watching the freestyle skiing/moguls. Also, congrats to the American for winning the bronze.

alot of interesting stuff going on

i am not normally a fan of figure skating, (though i do admire the incredible difficulty and make it a point to try and watch it during the olympics...)

but this japanese guy gets super extra bonus points from me, for choosing to do his routine to Jimi Hendrix "Bold As Love"

I've lived in Vancouver all my life so of course I'm rather biased.

I love the closeness of the beaches and the mountains. I live at a beach just south of Vancouver and about 100 feet from the American border. From the deck we can see the North Shore Mountains (Cypress where the mogals, halfpipe and such are being held.) But if I want to go skiing its only about 1.5 hours away or Whistler about 2.5 hours.

Unlike most of the rest of Canada and the USA, we get very little snow. This winter has been very mild but we seldom get snow and only usually have freezing about a week or two each winter. So what you see on TV is what you usually get here.

In regards to the Downtown Eastside it is the poorest neighbourhood in Canada but when I worked in that area I never felt threatened or afraid. I'm glad that the news media is showing the world that area. I hope the 3 levels of government are embarrassed and finally work together to solve the problems.

Vancouver is an extremely expensive to live in. Average cost per square foot of space runs between $ 500 to well over a $1,000. So a piddley assed 500 square foot 1 bedroom apartment can be anywhere from $ 350,000 to $ 500,000. A small tear-down house goes for not less than $ 750,000. I just sold my condo in Yaletown (near BC Place Stadium where the opening and closing ceremonies are being held.

I hope all the visitors have a great time. There's so much going on. From the sporting events to all the cultural events, party zones, country and sponsor pavilions, and all the great attractions and fantastically beautiful scenery.
