After discovering that I'm hypoglycemic 8 months ago, I had to cut down my sugar by about 90%, and start exercising regularly. I did just that and have gone from a 37 inch waist to a 32 inch waist. I am also now wearing medium underwear and shirts instead of large.

I have struggled with my weight for the last 16 years (since finishing university). I couldn't understand for the life of me why I was gaining weight so quickly. After finding out that I'm also celiac a couple of years ago, the weight really started piling on because gluten freee food is very high in sugar. The culprit all those years was sugar!

Thank you for the motivating words.

I too am a Celiac and I have a very difficult time getting rid of the sugar.
My great grandmother was a full blown diabetic. My father was borderline. My sugar tests show high, but not in red alert stage yet.

I bought a book called "Sugar Blues", and haven't had a chance to read it.
I'm hoping it has tips on how to reduce sugar intake but yet either satisfy or curb the cravings.

The sugar cravings are crazy for me. I MUST have chocolate. Its so addicting. I've tried fruit...it just doesn't curb the craving.

I don't really eat fast food anymore and haven't in a while due to the Celiac issues. I dropped 10 lbs right away when I cut out the wheat/gluten, but slowly gained it back and it probably was from the sugar.

I weighed myself on Friday and I already lost five pounds since I started the diet - on Monday.

Now granted, that's probably because I was coming off a month of eating and drinking whatever crap I felt like whenever I wanted. So just cutting out the constant beer and chocolate will automatically have a dramatic effect.

But still - five pounds in five days is quite encouraging. I don't realistically expect to keep that rate up though.

My mom is celiac, and my dad is type 2 diabetic. I managed to avoid diabetes by getting on top of my sugar addiction. I too lost weight when I went gluten free, but it came back and then some because GF food is so high in sugar. Going "cold turkey" worked for me with giving up sugar and caffeine. The first few days were hard, but after that it got easier. I too love chocolate, so what I did was switch to dark chocolate to satisfy my cravings. However, be careful because some dark chocolate is still high in sugar, and some has wheat in it. I like Lindt 90% dark chocolate because it's very low in sugar, and is wheat free. As a treat, I put some natural peanut butter on it (sugar and salt free). It's about the closest thing to a peanut butter cup (my favourite), and it's low in sugar. Try to keep sugar under 10 grams per serving. Sauces are notoriously high in sugar as are proocessed, frozen, junk and convenience foods. I avoid them completely. It's a little more work preparing meals, but is worth it. If you absolutely must have sugar, try coconut sugar or honey as a replacement. I haven't eaten white (refined) sugar in about 2 months now since discovering coconut sugar. It's low glycemic, and low in calories.

BTW - Even though I normally go by inches, I decided to weigh myself at the YMCA the other day. I have lost 6.5 pounds since the last time I weighed myself about a month ago. I have now gone from 220 pounds (when I started) to 198 pounds today, and have gone from a 37 inch waist to a 32 inch waist, all from cutting out sugar and exercising regularly.

Remember that sugar and caffeine is an addiction. It's hard to quit at first, but the pay off comes later with improved health. I have been receiving so many compliments about how good I look from co-workers, friends, family, gym buddies and my physiotherapist. You NEVER get tired hearing of it, and I'm also enjoying the extra glances I get when I'm naked in the wet area of the men's locker room at my Y!

My husband and I are doing Weight Watchers. We've both gotten seriously heavy lately - I just measured myself at 190 pounds, which is the heaviest I've ever been. But we are having a huge holiday in June so I want to be back down to about 155 by then.

So, starting on Jan 2 at 190 pounds.

.

Yeah for Weight Watchers!

Down 10 pounds in a month thanks to a meal delivery service. I've been very happy with the results.
