My immediate takeaways:
  • Pence, like Trump doesn't give a flying fk about rules or fair play. He repeatedly took more time than what he was supposed to have, and was allowed to get away with it.
  • The moderator, Susan Page, did just as horribly at reigning him in as Wallace did with Trump.
  • Pence did what he was sent to do... dodge and deflect from Trump's and HIS own HORRIBLE record while dropping the usual two to three word dog whistle rhetoric and references designed to resonate with THEIR supporters, who are largely incapable of processing anything more, and who'd reject all things to the contrary ANYWAY.
  • Harris did what SHE wanted to do, assure the American people that she is FULLY capable and ready for the role of VP and, for that matter, anything else.
  • Pence: The Calm Liar. Harris: Art of the SHADE.

So, not expecting any changes in anyone's minds at this point.

LOL

@b.c.
Not likely. But many people may being looking at those two as potentially the next POTUS. Pence came off better than Trump did in his debate. A low bar, but he could be motivating enough for some on the Right who might sit this one out, to hold their noses and vote Republican one more time. I would have appreciated it if Harris had answered more of the questions more directly. The woman I live with was really disappointed with her performance.

Well, this debate was more tolerable than the last one but still frustrating.

Both candidates simply avoided answering questions that might negatively affect their positions. And the moderator did not hold them to task. She was more concerned about covering as many different topics as possible than she was about getting a straight answer to the initial question posed. I would have preferred fewer topics (climate change? really?) and more time spent on the major issues.

I thought Harris appeared knowledgeable and relatable. I kind of wanted to see her be more aggressive though.

I thought Pence appeared long-winded and out of touch. His view of America right now is very different from mine.

My opinion is that neither candidate really won or lost. I doubt they swayed any voters either.

I'm kinda curious if we'll see these two candidates debating again in four years. Do you think it could happen?

I agree. Neither one decidedly won or lost. And my only disappointment with Harris was that, as you said, she was not aggressive enough. She let Pence slide on too much obvious bullshit. Hey, the FLY knew it was bullshit. So did we, but she should have confronted him more on it.

And yes, Pence's view of America was precisely what one would've expected from one in denial of racism - who defends racial disparities in law enforcement, denies systemic racism, and fails to even ACKNOWLEDGE his and Trump's OWN failed coronavirus response.

His face/expression/demeanor, the PERSONIFICATION of "We don't give a FUCK about 'those (YOU)' people."

Frankly, I don't know which I despise the most: the in your face, OVERT racism of Trump and those of that ilk, or the smug, quiet arrogance of those EQUALLY as reprehensible.

From David Frum at The Atlantic:
"We saw a weird moment where a fly landed on Pence’s snow-white hair—and the vice president did not react at all. No doubt, it’s a conundrum, what to do in such a situation. If Pence shooed the fly and the fly refused to shoo, that would be bad. So he did nothing. And that doing nothing somehow in one powerful visual moment concentrated everything. It symbolized the whole Pence vice presidency, the determined, willful refusal to acknowledge the most blaring and glaring negative realities. Through all of the scandals and the crimes and the disasters of the past four years, Mike Pence was the man who pretended not to notice. And now there was a fly on his head, and he pretended not to notice that too."

The most interesting thing for me was that despite have been task leader of the pandemic, so therefore should take some responsibility for 211,000 deaths and 7.5 million infections, all he could say was "we pray for you".
As is a prayer from him is going to comfort a bereaved parent, husband wife or lover, as if a prayer is going to put food on the table of the millions in food lines because the bread winner is lying in a coffin, as if prayer is going to wind back the clock.
Maybe Pence, as a man of god, thinks that a Prayer will absolve him of any responsibility.

However as a man of god to stand and lie unashamedly, and put on the mantle and face of a saint sinned against when his inactions wrecked untold communities all in the name of supporting Trumpism.

EXACTLY, A.B. Meanwhile, here are some more related news items and editorials (as in, opinions) on last night's debate:

SPEAKING OF WHICH:

AND:

Taylor Swift endorses Joe Biden for President

TODAY'S LAGNIAPPE:

An unexpected guest: Fly lands on Mike Pence's head during debate, goes viral

FLYGUY.jpg

The fly quickly went viral and created a stir online.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, referencing the fly, tweeted a photo of him with a fly swatter.

"Pitch in $5 to help this campaign fly," the tweet said. Biden several minutes later also tweeted the website, "flywillvote.com," which redirected to a website where people can check if they're registered to vote, as well as get information on how to vote by mail or in person.

The Biden campaign is also trying to capitalize on the viral moment by adding a fly swatter to their store, which says "Truth Over Flies."

By the way, I checked, and the fly swatters, at $10 a pop, are ALREADY SOLD OUT:

Ms. Harris did well in the debate, but, I was so frustrated that she did not call out at Pence to stop interrupting her, since the weak-ass "Moderator", Susan Page, wouldn't.

WTF is up with these "debates" where the incumbents are constantly and obnoxiously allowed to break the rules?

If there is a "next time", Kamala should get less polite!... Might I suggest she carry some Bug Spray?
