Does it bug anyone else that on TV shows and movies they always have guys in their mid to late 20s, if not older, playing teenagers? Luke Perry in 90210. The OC: 25 year old playing 17. Desparate Housewives: 26 year old playing "teenage gardener". Etc. Seriously, the majority of guys who play teenagers on these shows are nowhere near being teenagers. Incidentally, the girls are all teenagers. This bugs me to no end.

Well, dig it; In the 80's there was one actor in his 20's who consistently played a teen flawlessly, and that Ralph was Macchio. I tell you, if ever any one actor had a case of voluntary pedamorphism, is was Ralphie.

That 70s show made an eight year run with all the characters playing the same teenage roles: Topher Grace, Ashton Kutcher, and Wilder Valderamma being the male leads. Their age started to show towards the end, too, as it was increasingly difficult to view them as teens.

Danny Masterson played as Hyde on that show. Back in the early 90's he played as a college student on Roseanne. About ten years later on That 70's Show he was playing as a high school student. Weird isn't it.

It bugs me in real life when some members of the older generation don't consider people of ~30 to be grown ups - e.g. my eternal mother.

It bugs me that in real life people of 30 can consider themselves not fully adult, how long do some people need to grow up?

Our society perpetuates it. We treat our children like infants, our adolescents like children and our young adults like adolescents. Here (in the US, at least) you need to be 21 before you can even drink a fucking beer legally. "Children" under this age, apparently, are not responsible enough to handle their alcohol, although we can send 18 year olds to the desert with guns and trust them with people's lives (both protecting them and taking them). Also, there is sort of a stigma attached to being an adult which is why you see 25 year olds crying about how old they are. Appearing youthful is of extremely high importance for a large number of people, as can be seen by the sick amounts of "age-defying" moisturizers, plastic surgeries and other futile attempts at preserving something that was never meant to last and isn't that important anyway (for the non-vapid).

In the Uk we have a very strange set of age related rules - 16 to get married with parents permission or to have sex and to smoke: 17 to drive: 18 to vote, to drink, to get married without parent's permission, to look at or be in porn. Very strangely kids of five can drink wine in pubs or restaurants as long as it's with a meal!!!!!

In some states in the U.S. you need to be 21 to legally drink alcohol unsupervised. However, if you are between ages 18-21 you can legally drink behind closed doors if you have a parent or guardian at least 21 years old or a spouse that is at least 21 years old.

I'm not an expert in the industry, but my guess is that it's due to major differences in name recognition, acting experience, legal and financial and contractual considerations, and labor laws causing a distinction in casting over-18s and under-18s. Obviously there are exceptions, but I'm sure it's probably much less complicated to cast a 21-year-old as a 17-year-old, than to cast an actual 17-year-old. Also, if the producers think they will have a several-year production of the show, an older cast member changes less physically during the run.
